Bombed trucks and Snap Idle test?

Cummins cab plate

While coming back from a half day trip today, i passed a 2500 gasser chevy, and started thinking how many gas chevy HDs i see. so since traffic was light, i decided to do a little research. i grabbed a sheet of paper and marked down the first ten trucks i saw of each brand, ford chevy and dodge. i only looked at 3/4 and 1 tons, just the trucks that you can get a diesel in. here are the results:

Chevy--8 gas--2 duramax

Ford--5 gas--5 powerstroke

Dodge--10 cummins

i thought this was interesting. i dont really think the ford #s are accurate, because you see a lot of 'strokes but these were just the first ten i saw. i think you can draw a lot of interesting conclusions from this. Whats yall's take on it, what do the #s mean? looks like the chevys are for riding around, and the dodges are for work. or does it mean the chevy makes a really good gasser, and Mopar is crap?

Well, mines for riding around:D for years to come!

I have noticed, or rather I haven't seen, one single 3rd gen. duelly gasser. They all have the Cummins badge on the fender.

Also, I would agree with your numbers. I haven't counted, but that ratio seems right for the amount of each brand I've seen.

Well as much as I like my Dodge truck and the Cummins engine that's in it I wouldn't buy a Dodge with a gasser. I have a friend that has been a tech for Dodge for over 20 years and he has scared me away from their gasser trucks. I still haven't had any issues with my truck other than the trackbar. I'd have to say I've had much better luck with this truck than the Chevies I drove for 20 years prior.

I have no complaints (other than fuel mileage  ) with our previous 1996 3500 V-10 that we used to tow 5th wheels until we ordered our current truck. The 96 was a good, reliable truck.

Here in Southeast Texas, my thumbnail survey when we're on the road indicates that the Dodge Cummins is the truck used most often to pull the large goosenecks, livestock trailers and 5th wheels - if it has to do the heavy work reliably day in and day out, the Cummins seems to be preferred. Powerstrokes are 2nd, and the Duramax comes in 3rd. No hard data - just subjective observations on the highway.

well... I would rather have a Ford gasser than Dodge or GM...

but I'm pretty much a Ford guy... not a blind loyalist by any means... I wouldn't touch a Ford modular w/ a 10 foot pole, but Ford small blocks are my fave. I've owned probably 30-35 cars, and I can count on one hand the number that weren't SBF powered.

I HATE GM... their current LS1-based V8's are awesome... they wipe the floor w/ Ford's modular... the only decent modulars are factory supercharged, and those only come in specialty vehicles. but as much as I love the engines, I HATE GM with a passion... I would have to go back pretty far (mid 60's) before I found a GM product that I would waste my time on.

I don't really have much of an opinion on Dodge... I DO think they've got the best looking full size trucks right now, but I'll never own one, so that's kinda moot... I prefer Ford trucks to Dodge, but other than the steering on my 92 and now my 97, I don't really have any complaints.

But, I will never buy another gas powered truck, so it's pretty much a moot point for me as to who's got the best gasser.

one of these days, I'm gonna drop a 12v 5. 9B in a Ford crew cab, and I'll be in hog heaven! :D

till then, I'm enjoying my Cummins... er... I mean Dodge :p
