Archived Something Popped?

I need some help. I think a refrigerant line blew this morning. I heard a pop/whoosh and a cloud of gas came from under the hood. The engine didn't change it's tone and there was no fluid leaking from anywhere I could see.



Is it a refrigerant line or is there something else I should be looking at? I don't know what to look for.

When R134 leaks out it leaks out oil as well so you should see it. How is your boost pressure? Do you hear a whistle under hard accel?

Nothing seemed to change. I don't have any extra gauges so I can't tell you about any boost or fuel pressures. It still ran good. No problems with acceleration, brakes, steering etc... The heater still worked too. Oil pressure was good and it didn't overheat.

Probably an A/C line.



Turn on your defroster. I believe the compressor won't kick in if there is no line pressure in the A/C system. It may also cycle very fast. Either way it won't sound/look right.

Check you A/C lines near the air filter box. Mine was rubbing their until I put additional tape their.

THat's why it's so wierd. Everything is working normally as far as I can tell. The defrost worked normally this morning as well.



Could a vent line that had some condensation frozen in it caused this? It was running for a few minutes before it happened and I had it plugged in all night.

Have you checked all your fluid levels, mainly the coolant level in the radiator ???

In the winter the ac system will appear to work fine. You need to get a set of ac gauges and check the charge in the ac system.



I would bet you blew an AC line. I have the same thing happen on a car a couple of years ago.

Yes I have. All are normal. It's almost time for an oil change though. I'll check them again when I change the oil in a week or so. Thanks Shooter.

I think you are right. That was my initial thought also. I'm going to take it to the dealer and have them check it out. I think I'll wait until it gets a little warmer though. As long as the heat works I'll be ok for now. Thanks everyone for all your advice and assistance! Oo.

You need to take it in soon because the compressor works while using the defroster. Running without a charge leaves the compressor without lubrication and will trash it it short fashion.



Under warranty it'll be fixed, but no reason to leave it broke.

I think the compressor will not run without a charge of coolant. The next time you use the defrost, open the hood and make sure the clutch is engaged and running the compressor.
