I have a 1999 Dually, 3500 24Valve and am experiencing a whining noise that speeds up with the engine R. P. M. . I've got 187,000 miles on it and have replaced the belt tentioner, and had the alternator rebuilt. The mechanic that rebuilt the alternator checked the water pump and the idler pulley and said that they both seemed to be fine. Has anybody else experienced this problem? and if so what will fix it? This whine will almost cover up the whistle of the turbo. I'd appreciate some suggestions.

B,

I had a similar problem that was caused by the AC compressor clutch. It has 3 flat springs that hold the clutch plate away from the pulley and 2 of them were broken, allowing the clutch plate to ride against the pulley.

I want to Thank You for the suggestion about the A/C clutch, I never thought about that. I'll check it this weekend... . I'll let ya know what I find. Thank You B Bland

I have a stange whine to my truck too. It only seems to happen at low speed no load, and seems to come from under the middle or the rear of truck. I looked at the rear the last time i changed fluid and everything seemed fine. Randy

I've checked the A/C pulley and it sems to be alright... . There isn't any play like I thought there would be if those springs are bad. I'm going to try running it without the belt on to see if whats causing the noise is something belt driven. My buddy and I checked the turbo and there is no excessive play in it. I'm going to wait till warmer weather unless something goes wrong and it quits running to do more checking.
