Son Deployed, Oil EVERYWHERE now SOLVED

my son deployed to Afghanistan (Cav Scout) the end of February and had the oil changed in hid 09' 6. 7 2 days before he left and drove it around town just a little bit. I have went to his house and driven it each month a little bit, just to let it warm up and get all the gear oil moving around

My son was at Ft. Riley Ks. and yesterday I was up there from Texas to bring his truck down here and get some Iron Bull bumpers installed and a dpf delete performed at the local diesel shop

His truck is a 09' 2500 Mega Cab 4X4 bone stock with 24,000 miles on it

I headed out driving 70 mph with the exhaust brake on like he always does (and we do on my wife's 08"). I got about 70 miles, stopped for coffee and when I came out the whole underside of the truck was covered with oil clear back to the rear bumper with puddles forming everywhere!!! I checked the dipstick and oil still read on the dipstick about at the 1/2 level (thank God).

Thinking with slightly over 100 miles since the oil change the filter was loose I called Chrysler road side assistance and had the truck hauled back to the dealership that has worked on the truck before and performed the recent oil change.

Two mechanics looked at the truck. The oil filter was dry. That side of the engine was pretty dry. The turbo was dry. It did not appear there was fuel in the oil and the leakage appeared to be pure engine oil. Most of the oil was on the non-filter side of the engine which they said was very strange. They started the truck and "no visable leaks".

Any ideas? They mentioned something about something plugging up and blowing the pan gasket out? I've never heard of that! The only problem he has had with the truck is 2 blow a/c hoses.

I had to work today so I left the truck, jumped in my trusty 06' 5. 9 and returned to Texas about 2:00 a. m.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thank God the dpf delete had not been completed so he still has 100% warranty.

Thanks in advance and pray for our troops.

Had a similar thing happen to me, but it was diesel all over the under side of the truck and up on the tailgate. Had to have a few injector lines replaced and tightened up properly. Had one idiot state it was coming from my fuel filters (GDP 2 micron and H2O sep under the truck). If they have a GOOD diesel tech, he'll find it.

LBARTLETT,

Sorry, no ideas on your truck.

Just wanted to thank your Son for his service to us and send my best wishes to him and your family.

LBARTLETT,

We'll add your son to our prayer list. We just returned from my son's send-off ceremony today. He will be part of force protection for an ag. development team in Afghanistan. My son in law will be returning next month from Afghanistan. Our daughter and grandkids can't wait - There sure are a lot of great Americans serving in uniform!

GCroyle & BSeyler, thank you both and I'll be praying for your son and son-in-law, Brett's been to Iraq but this is his first trip to Afghanistan, he's in Helmand province (FOB Wilson) in the grape and poppy region with the 4-4 Cav

Every time I'm around the bases and men I am amazed at the quality of the individuals serving, makes me so proud and much different than when I got out in 73'

I think if more Americans knew the "Rules of Engagement" our men were fighting under they would be as sickened as I and others are

Sure don't hear much on the news about casualties with our new POTUS, we've lost more troops in Iraq than anytime since the supposed "combat actions" ended and I believe we lost 14 in Afghanistan last week of which 4 were Texans

I'm surprising him with a TDR gift subscription to his overseas address and he can pass it on when he's done with it and maybe we can get some more cummins owners

a good website for any interested is

iCasualties | Operation Enduring Freedom | Afghanistan

I'll keep everyone apprised when I learn more about his truck

I heard from the dealership yesterday

Apparently there is a dipstick hole on each side of the block, the side without the dipstick is plugged, apparently the plug came out, this is very rare

the dealership called cummins when they were at a dead end to discover this, the cummins guy knew of 4 others, the dealership put a different plug in as per cummins,

they explained it to me much like a engine "soft plug", the reason for a dipstick hole on each side of the block is that it allows them to have the option of the diptstick placement depending on the application of how the engine is used, the plug on a 6. 7 is on the non-oil filter side of the engine

glad it was somewhat simple with no damage to the engine but it sounds very rare so hopefully it won't happen to anyone else

LBARTLETT,

Glad that was found, get it documented for future coverage/related issues. If you have any concerns from any loss of oil pressure, Geno's and maybe the dealership also has oil test kits, using the Geno's you get an independent oil analysis for documenting any possible hidden issues.

Any chance for a picture of the alternate dip stick hole location?

Best regards,

Gary

Sounds like, all things considered, that is about the best possible outcome you could hope for. I'm glad to hear it was nothing major.

I would like to add my sincere thanks and best wishes for your son's (and his family's) service to our country.

Rusty

I'm a little confused. The dipstick on my truck IS on the non filter side, so the plug would be on the pass-side. Did they change sides on the '09 trucks.

There is a bracket that is spot welded onto the oil dipstick tube. The spot welds broke on my truck a while back and I had a lot of oil on the drivers side of the engine and under it also. I replaced the tube and fixed the problem. This wasn't your problem, I'm just giving a heads up in case anyone else has an oil leak on that side of the engine and can't find it. It was hard to find for a while.
