Truck has about 80k miles. When I start it up with no throttle I get puff of black smoke and dry soot exiting the tailpipe. After initial puff the exhaust clear but yesterday I wrapped a white towel around exhaust tip and ran it for 3 minutes a idle. The towel came back black and slightly oily. The soot on the floor I can normally sweep up, it's pretty dry. I've noticed soot on my fender well which I never had when I had a stock setup. I think this started happening same time I installed a 4" exhaust exhaust with low back pressure muffler and elminated the resonator. However I also installed a XZT+ chip at same time which I run in the middle. , 30 hp setting. Truck runs fine with puff of smoke between 35-50 mph if I hit the throttle hard. Does not smoke at WOT. Makes no difference in smoke level if chip is off, 30hp or 70 hp setting. Boost is where it's always been, about 19 PSI WOT. Air filter ok. I do get turbo bark when towing if I hit throttle to hard and then release from a full stop.

Reading the forum posts on soot some owners suggest this soot is norrmal and some report seeing increase after installing larger exhaust and/or going to straight pipes.

I read in one post about a Diesel Particulate filter that installs in the exhaust pipe. Said it was made by Fleetguard. Does anyone have experience with this device? I have to do something before my wife relegates my truck to the driveway because I'm carrying soot onto the carpets when I come into the house from the garage!!! Don't always take my shoes off!!

Any help appreciated. Can poor spraying injectors be detected on a scanner or do they have to be pulled and run in a injector test booth. ? I'm a novice with diesels. Has anyone noticed any increased soot with the new diesel fuel?

You can tell Mom that you need to replace the injectors because one is "dribbling" and the soot is one indicator of this problem. Then you can order a set of Mach 1. 5's and get the added benifit of MPGs and you don't have to take your shoes off. Sorry Forrest. :)

Some time ago I had thought about installing an RV injector but was afraid of more black smoke. Will the Mach 1. 5 increase smoke( no dribbling but more smoke) ? Will it affect EGTs at high altitude and towing heavy load. Right now I have a problem above 7,000 feet and getting to max EGT easily. In fact, I can't even use the 70HP chip setting when towing in the mountains because the slighest touch of throttle when pulling uphill maxes EGT. I have the stock turbo charger for the auto transmission.

Thanks, George

There are many options availible to you. I wrote in jest about the Mom comment. I would think that you have a leaking injector that pushes the small amount of fuel in the line into your combustion chamber.

I mention the Mach # injectors because I have run both the RV and F1 injectors and claim better results with the F1 mod.

You need to decide what you want the truck to do and how it will perform while fixing your smoke problem.

I think it is an ULSD issue. Darn soot is no good anymore and will not even collect in the muffler. If is not sticky like the good old soot of yesteryear. SNOKING

I've decided to take the truck to a injector shop. They will run a full scan plus test injector pump pressure and pull the injectors and test them. If everything ok guess I'll put on a stock muffler as a trap. I really didn't notice much performance gain when I went to 4" turbo back and low backpressure muffler. The shop manager also mentioned I might want to try a fuel additive. Said some customers have reported decreased smoke and soot but didn't say which additive.

Question is , new injectors? What type? I wouldn't mind a little additional HP when towing in the mountains plus I would like to reduce my EGTs because truck runs right at red line when pulling hard on steep climbs in Colorado. My goal is also no smoke. Can any new injector accomplish this miracle or am I better with stock injectors. I had thought about a new intercooler to try and get EGTs down because that's currently my limiting factor.

I see in you OP that you stated 19psi WOT boost. Do you have a boost fooler? This would certainly help your EGT issue towing in the mountains.
