Truck has about 80k miles. When I start it up with no throttle I get puff of black smoke and dry soot exiting the tailpipe. After initial puff the exhaust clear but yesterday I wrapped a white towel around exhaust tip and ran it for 3 minutes a idle. The towel came back black and slightly oily. The soot on the floor I can normally sweep up, it's pretty dry. I've noticed soot on my fender well which I never had when I had a stock setup. I think this started happening same time I installed a 4" exhaust exhaust with low back pressure muffler and elminated the resonator. However I also installed a XZT+ chip at same time which I run in the middle. , 30 hp setting. Truck runs fine with puff of smoke between 35-50 mph if I hit the throttle hard. Does not smoke at WOT. Makes no difference in smoke level if chip is off, 30hp or 70 hp setting. Boost is where it's always been, about 19 PSI WOT. Air filter ok. I do get turbo bark when towing if I hit throttle to hard and then release from a full stop.
Reading the forum posts on soot some owners suggest this soot is norrmal and some report seeing increase after installing larger exhaust and/or going to straight pipes.
I read in one post about a Diesel Particulate filter that installs in the exhaust pipe. Said it was made by Fleetguard. Does anyone have experience with this device? I have to do something before my wife relegates my truck to the driveway because I'm carrying soot onto the carpets when I come into the house from the garage!!! Don't always take my shoes off!!
Any help appreciated. Can poor spraying injectors be detected on a scanner or do they have to be pulled and run in a injector test booth. ? I'm a novice with diesels. Has anyone noticed any increased soot with the new diesel fuel?
