I removed the intake hose from my BHAF when changing oil the other day, I noticed that there is some fine soot on the inside rim and compressor blades of my turbo. Is this normal or is it time for a new BHAF (or something else?) Thanks.

I have had soot on my intake for quite some time just figured the seals were starting to go. Now about 22k i think my bearings are going... . I would think about getting a rebuild kit and rebuild it if you think you can... I will rebuilding mine this week... Good luck, Marc

How did the rebuild go? I noticed soot and oil mixture on the compressor side of the my turbo. Is this normal? I have 196,000 miles on the engine with original OE turbo. Do I need to rebuild it?

I've seen dust and Oil from over oiled filters that don't catch the fine dirt. I've got a Fleetguard BHAF and the turbo stays clean. I've seen friends trucks with hardly any miles on a new oiled filter that left stuff on the turbo. One had enough oil go into the tubing that when he added a box he couldn't keep the boot on any more.

I cut (not drilled) a hole in the end of mine and installed the stock filter minder which is how I determine when a new filter is needed.
