I'm looking for a deeper/meaner sound to my 12 V.

There is a Fire Engine here in my town that sounds MEAN-as-Hell and I want my truck to sound like it too! I noticed it has a HUGE single exhause sticking out the side. It looks like 5... maybe even 6" diameter pipe sticking out of it ??

Anyone running a single 5" Straight Exhaust ??

Are there sound clips anywhere out here ??

man, w/ a 5sp, some fuel, and an HX40, the 5" straight pipe on my 97 sounded absolutely WICKED!!!! way louder/meaner than my stacks... women and children would dive behind bushes for cover, grown men would wet themselves in fear... ok, not really, but bottom line is it sounded awesome. I wanted to put a couple feet of 6" pipe for the last section of the tailpipe, but I never got around to it. :)

a 12 valve with single 5" exhaust sounds pretty dang good... . the 5" carries a very deep tone to it... .
I know it's REAL subject, but how does the 5" single sound compared to 4" or 5" dual stacks ??

5" single has a much sharper harsher sound to it... and it's low to the ground and bounces off of everything... sounds MEAN

dual stacks have a smoother cleaner sound and a lot of the sound waves end up above everyone's heads and aren't as loud.

don't get me wrong, I love the way stacks sound... I had three different stack setups on my 97 :) but I love a 5" single

Is the single 5" noise level "tolerable" or is it obnoxiously loud ??

I got 4" straight pipe and I get comments all the time about how cool my truck sounds I think being a 5-speed that helps cause each shift I can make it bark a little.

I have the same set and it does sound pretty damn good as is.

I'm curious as to how the tailpipe location (before the rear wheel -Vs- behind the rear wheel) effects the sound quality/tone/volume ??

Where is your tailpipe exiting your truck ??

My 2001 with a pdr hx40 and straight pipe is also some wicked sounding exhaust, bu ti think i am going def from it. i have the wear ear plugs of long hauls. my exhaust is shorty also.

Does the size of the turbo affect how noticeable it sounds as it briefly spools down in between shifts on a manual transmission? I love the way the big rigs sound in between gears, but somehow I don't envision the stock HX35 on my 12V sounding like that if I straight-piped it.

Removing the Silencer Ring from your Turbo will help! It will make your Turbo "SING" !!

Yep, my silencer ring is gone, but that seems to only enhance the whistling from the air intake (at least with my stock exhaust system). What I'm talking about is the turbo sound through the EXHAUST, coming out the tailpipe (or stacks in the case of a big rig). To me, there is a pretty big difference between intake turbo sounds and exhaust turbo sounds.

Yes the size of the turbo matters, the bigger the single the louder out the exhaust your truck will be.

Cool. That's what I figured, but I didn't really know for sure. Which affects it more, the housing size or the impeller size?

Behind the rear wheel.

On the 6. 0 NOs I swear that all you can hear out the exhaust is the turbo whistle. Seen a straightpiped video of one and it's almost annoying
