On the 6. 0 NOs I swear that all you can hear out the exhaust is the turbo whistle. Seen a straightpiped video of one and it's almost annoying

You got that right. I heard one at a gas station the other day, and couldn't believe it--that high-pitched shrieking at low throttle sounded ridiculous to me, but that's just my opinion. What puts a smile on my face is the deeper, more mellow warbling sound like you get from a straight-piped C8. 3 in a logging truck between jake brakes while he's heading back down the mountain side after loading. :D :-laf Oh well, I suppose that's just a little out of reach for our trucks.

Back to the original question of this thread--does anyone have any sound clips comparing 4" and 5" exhaust on a 12V?

you guys are nuts, the 6. 0's sound awesome when spooling up!

a smaller turbine housing will obviously turn the turbine at a higher speed per exhaust flow, so the turbo will be more prominant... 6. 0's have a variable nozzle turbine, so they spin the turbo really fast at first compared to a fixed turbine.

but on our trucks, a bigger turbine w/ a 4" pipe clamped directly to the back of it is going to sound louder/meaner than a smaller turbine with a 3" cast iron elbow bolted to it

I defenetly noticed a difference in the sound department when I upgraded to my new turbo with a true 4" downpipe vs. the stock HX35 with the 3. 5 or whatever it was...

Had a 5" system before the stacks. Had a severe drone with the 5", and had to install a resonator to tame that. It is much louder than the stacks. Great for setting off car alarms in parking garages. :D

The stacks are deeper sounding. Like the sound better than the straight 5" exhaust.

I do miss all the whistle at idle with the HX-40, as apposed to the stock HX-35. The 40 does make up for it on the road, though. :D Climbing a hill with 10# boost, and passing a rig or a hillside, it sounds just like a big truck. My dad has confused me with a Peterbilt before. lol

Afreaknmen, It is kind of dissapointing sometimes you hear one spool and whip your head aroung ready to see a cloud of smoke and something tearing off and the 6. 0 is just trying to turn right at a stop light.

I just upgraded my 4" system to a Bullydog 5" system and it sounds much more like a big rig now. The muffler/resonator that comes with the system doesn't seem to muffle the sound much so I'm going to take that off and straight pipe it... . hopefully that will give me more turbo whistle than I already have and not much more noise... .

I would say the 5" system is not annoying if you're taking it easy around town. But when you want it to be annoying to others, it's VERY loud. My freind was driving next to me on the freeway with his windows up and stereo turned up and when I went by him at WOT he said he thought I was going to blow out his windows... I think a COP would definitely pull me over at WOT... . it's LOUD. But I love it and it's not very loud in the cab until you roll down the passenger window and you hear it bouncing off everything you drive by. Who knows how much louder it will be when I remove the muffler... .

Well, maybe I'm just not observant, but I have to say I've never heard anything else sound like the 6. 0 I was referring to in the previous post--and I've certainly seen a number of other 6. 0s around. This one did not sound like any other diesel I have heard spooling up, straight-piped or not. It was whistling very high pitched when the driver was just pulling away from the pump (no load or trailer) and out into the Safeway parking lot--not like he was stepping on it at all. Is that what the new variable turbines sound like when straight piped? I actually wondered if he had one of those goofy "fake turbo whistlers" that you stick in the tailpipe, but I have never actually seen or heard one that I know of.

Don't get me wrong. Usually the more the turbo sings, the better I like it, but this one was wierd, in my oppinion. But than again, even though I'm a staunch 12V guy, I also think the 24Vs sound much better, so what do I know. :D

yup, that's what they sound like... when they're straight piped or even if they have a straight through performance muffler (no cat of course) that turbo whistle is CRAZY when they're just easing away from a stop...

and actually, when they romp on it, you'll hear a really quick turbo scream, and then they sound like a gasser once the power hits

I agree with CTD12V on this. I was on my way home the other day and a squirrel in a 6. 0 was behind me and was making some noises that resembled a rabbit caught by a cat :-laf It sounded so ridiculous I thought it was actually broken and needed fixed. Then again you have to consider the source I suppose. Pretty pathetic sounding truck to say the least.

Now THAT is funny! :-laf :-laf I'm just not sure about those 6. 0s--guess I'll have to pay a little more attention from now on :p

i have to agree the 6. 0's sound like a gasser. i have seen them a pulls and i sound like they have glass packs. nothing beats the sound of a cummins!

thats the part i love, any real sound of the engine makes me queazy.
V-8 Diesels don't sound good at all IMHO.

There just isn't anything like the sound of a Inline 6 Diesel engine !!

a 12 valve with single 5" exhaust sounds pretty dang good... . the 5" carries a very deep tone to it... .
What difference would it make if the outlet was BEFORE the rear wheel instead of having it exit BEHIND the rear wheel ??

i dont know what it would sound like on these trucks. but i will say i my old 1/2 ton ram i had a 3" pipe i front of the wheel, i came from a flowmaster super 40, it sounded sweet, but the exhaust gases reacked havoc in my wheel and center cap, wheel was always dirty looking and the center cap and lug nuts rusted right up. it was sool but i wouldnt do it again. with the way a bombed cummins smokes good luck keeping the side of your truck clean. just my opinion.
