Well, in an effort to make the old truck a little more enjoyable to drive on long trips, I pulled the interior, all but the headliner and dash, and installed 1/2" rubber on the floor and 3/8" rubber mat on the outer door skin and the rear quad cab panels. Also glued 1/2" rubber belting to the area below the back glass. As has been reported in the past, the back of the cab is bare metal, and any effort at insulating for sound control has a significant return.

I invested about 10 hours on this project and can say that overall it was worth the time. However, I was disappointed in the reduction of engine noise. I think that my next efforts will include laminating sheet lead and rubber sheeting to make a damping material that I'll install on the transmission tunnel from the underside of the truck in my efforts to quiten the mighty Cummins, at least from the driver seat.

As a side note, after adding all the extra rubber, you can't hear the exhaust at all. And that's without a muffler or cat. That is with the windows up, to hear the good sounds, all I've gott'a do is lower the passenger side window.

Without padding that firewall, you will always here that kitten purr..... I was amazed at how much engine noise even those rubber boots stop (in the firewall - for wires). I mistakenly left one off (the one that covers where a clutch would go through) and was surprised how much louder it was in the cab... .

any marine dealers in your area? I have seen material sold at boat places looks like combination rubber and tin foil? supposed to be heat, water and whateverelse resistant, sold to quitet marine engine noise. just a thought.

There was a post in the past the said that a lot of the engine noise is from resonance in the header pipe. Replaceing a section of the pipe with flex like used on big rigs is supposed to reduce this noise. Has anyone tried that?

Dynamic Control, Inc. (Dynamat) sells a product called Dynaliner Max which is comprised of: a bottom layer of 1/8" neoprene foam, 15 mils of acoustic lead, 1/4" of high efficiency open/closed cell foam, and a 3 mil urethane top facing. This is about 7/16" thick.
