Well, in an effort to make the old truck a little more enjoyable to drive on long trips, I pulled the interior, all but the headliner and dash, and installed 1/2" rubber on the floor and 3/8" rubber mat on the outer door skin and the rear quad cab panels. Also glued 1/2" rubber belting to the area below the back glass. As has been reported in the past, the back of the cab is bare metal, and any effort at insulating for sound control has a significant return.
I invested about 10 hours on this project and can say that overall it was worth the time. However, I was disappointed in the reduction of engine noise. I think that my next efforts will include laminating sheet lead and rubber sheeting to make a damping material that I'll install on the transmission tunnel from the underside of the truck in my efforts to quiten the mighty Cummins, at least from the driver seat.
As a side note, after adding all the extra rubber, you can't hear the exhaust at all. And that's without a muffler or cat. That is with the windows up, to hear the good sounds, all I've gott'a do is lower the passenger side window.
