Hi,

I am upgrading the sound system in my truck. I have added the subs I want and the door speakers. Now I would like to add tweaters up front to complete system. Has anyone out there with a pre 98 installed 98-01 a pillars in there rig in order to get the built in tweater mount? both left and right? Looks like it would work to me, but tought I would see if anyone else has tried it.

Thanks,

Jason

I cant really answer your question, but I want to caution you depending on what speakers you go with putting tweeters on the piller my be to "high" end for the system. The closer the tweeters are to the speaker the better the sound you get. Dodge put the tweeters in the pillars because they know nothing about stereos. I have the Boston Pro's componet speakers and put the tweeter in the door by the speaker. I just left the piller tweeters in and unhooked.

Jason, what Mike says in this thread about being "too high" is right on the money. I have a three gauge pod on my 01 with a tweeter on the A-pillar LHS and just the tweeter on the right (both MB-Quartz)and my own ICE system gives me the option of "personalizing" the output to them.

I'd also give serious consideration to installing some sound deadening material everywhere in the cab apart from the headliner, to REALLY bring out the sound quality of your system.

I concur with both John & Sky. You do not want your tweeters this high. I did exactly what Sky did with my Boston Acoustic Pro's. Put the tweeter above the woofer in the stock speaker location. Because the existing space is for a 6X9, The 6 1/2 will fit low and the Tweeter fits above the 6 1/2 with no problem and you have overall better sound dispersion. The manual for the 6. 5 pro's from BA recomend this especially with their crossovers. (which are included)

Thanks

Thanks for the info,

I will go forward with Installing 6 1/2 and seperate tweats in the doors. In my 96 it has a stock 6x9 and a seperate 3 1/2 in each door. I will put the tweats in the 3 1/2 location and the 6 1/2 in the 6x9 location. Cant wait to get them in, my subs drown the rest of the system out.

i dont know if i would say that "Dodge put the tweeters that high because they know nothing about stereos"

Jaguar, Infiniti, Lexus, VW, BMW, Mercedecs and Acura to name a few ALL put there tweeters in the A pillar, right where ours are. Form what i have always heard, you want high frequency sounds at ear level, so they are not muffled by mids and lows as if they were mounted in the component speakers in the doors. Every stereo place i have talked to has told me the same thing, thats why they make tweeters designed to fit in A pillars and they even make tweeters that mount in the headrests.

I have read several articles and talked to several audio peeps and they all say the closer to the speaker the better. Thats why your starting to see alot of high end speakers make that insert that goes right over the speaker for the tweet. I use to think it was better the other way too. Like your getting a more of a surround feel but its not the best sound. If you get a good tweeter that is that far away blasteing in your face then your going to have to go to -2 on the trebble. Or it will just be to "high", and be almost ear piercing.

I agree with Sky. I had Polk audio seperates in my 86 F250 with the tweeters on the A-pillar. Had to adjust my crossover so almost no sound came out of the tweeters because it was too high. I then just ended up getting a 30 watt amp to push the tweeters then a 150 watt amp to push the woofers. It wasn't until I talked to a local car audio shop that I found out that the tweeters should be as close to the woofers as possible. Go to any home audio store. that uses separates. The only speakers you will find are midrange with tweeters ( like Bose ) The only thing that makes it a seperate's system is the Subwoofer, which is omni directional and can be mounted anywhere in the room.

Just my 2 cents .....
