Does anyone have a good source for reliable good quality air solenoids? I have gone through two hadley solenoids for my horns so far and am needinging some better ones (also for air bag install). Grainger only seems to carry those for machines and industrial, not for automotive use.

Napa has one.........

When I did my air horns I got one from Napa for around $45. Part #730-1009. A little more pricey than the Hadley one. Only draw back is it takes quite a bit of power to drive it when the air pressure is high, or I got a dud, who knows. I had to wire in a relay off the horn circuit to fire it consistantly. As far as relliability I haven't had it in but a month so time will tell.

Just put a Hadley one in the old lady's truck so I'll see how long that lasts too.

When I got my air horns they did not come with a solenoid. So I went to the local Kenworth truck shop and asked them if they had em. They guy says "yup" and gets me a big ol solenoid that is used for air brakes. It has worked fine so far, I paid about $40 bucks for it. It was rated for 120 psi, but I have 135 psi going to it and it holds fine

Dane I very well could be wrong but just looking at the pics of those air valves they appear to be the type where a small electric motor turns a ball valve. My experience with this type is they are too slow for an application like a horn.

Illflem is right- the kind that AIM sells are more designed for air suspension/lift/lowering. AIM is also a tad pricey on thos kinds of things. Air horn solenoids need to be magnetic driven and direct acting solenoids. I'll give the local big rig shop a call, didn't think about that. ;)

JC whitney part # 17ZX1925Y

$26. 95

holds 150psi+. takes half a second for horn to get up to full volume with 1' of 3/8" hose between the solenoid and the horn.

If you think you need high-pressure, industrial type solenoids you might try a place called Burden's Surplus Center out of Lincoln, NE. I think they have a website too now. They sell alot of air and hydraulic parts as components - not systems. Only place I could get a compact loader valve for my YAN/Deere - cheap!!!

Surplus Center is a great place, I use them quite often, many things you can't find elsewhere for rock bottom prices. Most is new unused surplus. Couldn't find a website but you can order a catalog from 800-488-3407
