How do I get into the steering column?

Purchased an Aero Turbine 4040 muffler for my 2004 3500 Turbo 600. Installing the muffler shouldn't be a problem, if I could acquire the necessary 4" aluminized pipe locally. Trouble is, no local muffler businesses cut, bend and form such pipe.

I contacted one company out in Oregon, and they want $125, plus shipping, for the necessary pipes, clamps, and hangers. CMP in OKC wants similar prices for the items (why is this stuff so expensive?).

Is there a specialty shop or big rig business in the Nashville, Tennessee, area that has the capability to cut and form (bend) the pipe; would/could supply the needed items to complete the install? What is the most economical source for the necessaries? Has anyone else had this difficulty with acquiring 4" exhaust pipe?

Before YOU purchase a muffler, a good idea is to research the items/parts/supplies needed to complete the install, obviously what I did NOT do. It is a learning process to discover that not many muffler businesses work on 4" pipe. I might have to open a business in Nashville myself!

Help!

Most auto parts stores sell short pieces (3ft) of 4" pipe. The muffler shop can probably swedge the ends for you if you need.

The propblem w/ the auto part stores pipe is it is a straight piece, we need a bent piece to fit right.

Let me know if you find anywhere that has it fairly cheap shipped. I'm not close to you but I was looking at getting the exact set-up and haven't yet because I didn't want to almost double the price of the aeroturbine. If you get it done, let me know how you like it!

I can get the pipe for about 8 bucks a foot (if I remember correctly). If you want them to install it, it insantly becomes a 20/ft piece with $40 install, that's just the pipe. I found that out when I had the cat removed. Ended up paying somewhere around $120 for a pipe that is only as long as the cat itself, they just cut inside the factory clamps and welded in a new one.

dricks and rmarky, you need to look at truck pro or a parts house for semis or class 8 trucks. truck pro is like a auto zone or napa for trucks and they have 90s and 45s and all pieces for making down pipes for around 20 to 40 dollars apiece, hope this helps.

IMO The easiest and best thing to do would be to buy a good exhaust, cut the 18 or so inches out for the Aeroturbine and be done with it. I tried the same thing with my '03 over two years ago and it was a real PITA and it doesn't fit right, so I still have trouble with it. I'm ready to scrap it and go with a pre made system.

When I did my turbo swap I needed a diffrent downpipe and wanted to install an inline Pacbrake. I fiddles sround wiht making one but finally wound up buying a downpipe from a kit and modifying that for the turbo on the top and the brake on the bottom. The cutting and fitting to get all the bends right is not worth the couple hundred bucks for a system IMO. The twins on the other hand... . I'll do that plumbing :D

Source for 4 inch exhaust pipe

Thanks for the advice and discussion. This is an aggrivating problem: no commercial vendors who work on 4 inch pipe. This will continue to frustrate owners of 4 inch exhaust systems (who want to customize), until there is a major demand for the service. Equipment and tools investments are the biggest drawback for the smaller muffler shops. Those who sell the necessary materials will do so at a very high price until the muffler shops invest in the stuff needed.

I'll try the Truck Pro source. Thanks again.

If all you need is a straight section, Jegs sells it in 4 foot sections.

Even semi truck shops probably can't bend 4" pipe. Semis use flex pipe to hook up their exhaust systems, or they purchase the bends and hook it up with flex pipe.
