After a couple of years owning a Frantz bypass filter, I've come to the conclusion that I want to change the large o-ring more often than I have been to avoid leakage. I've been changing them every 5 or 6 filter changes but sometimes get leakage if they're near the end of their life. I've bought them from We Filter It, the maker of Frantz, but I'm wondering if anyone has a better and cheaper source, or knows the specs for them so I could search the gasket houses online. Other than this occasional slight leakage, I couldn't be happier with the Frantz. TIA, Jim

any decent hardware store might have O-rings that will fit - but making certain they are compatible with the oil might be an issue - then there are parts houses too.



All the Frantz filters I have owned were adjustable for seating pressure to the base and rubber gasket, if that doesn't prevent leakage, you may have another problem such as a damaged canister or base sealing surface. I've used the same gasket for years, with no indication of leakage - and would sure start looking for a cause if it needed to be replaced every few cartridge changes. ;)

I'd be more concerned whether the oring could take the heat... most of those hardware store ones are neoprene or rubber, not nitrile... if you can find out the material type, it might be a worthy sorce though...

Do you have the restrictor in the inlet? It's a fitting with a small hole to limit pressure - get it from wefilterit

Good point!



The Frantz filters are made for many applications - and while the recommended restrictor orifice in in the 1/16 - 1/8 inch range, SOME of the filters come without restrictors for other applications, and when the unrestricted, higher oil pressure is applied to the Frantz, it *can* create leakage issues.

Got the restrictor in it. Bought this Frantz during the group buy a while back. Deborah Walker said it was the correct unit for a Cummins. I need to clarify a little I guess. Sometimes it seems that I have a hard time tightening the band knob tight enough because it's in a crowded area next to the battery. Not too much room to get a good grip on it. Sealing seems to be perfect when the gasket is newer but not as good when used 6 or so times. I just thought if I could buy 50-100 of these gaskets at the right price, then I could change them every filter change and not skimp. The canister and base are in perfect condition so I guess I might have to make a little handle to grip the knob better if I can't find the o-rings. Thanks for everyones advice. Jim ><>

I read in their literature that you can "turn the "O"ring" a quarter turn for longer life usage. I did this on mine and it was like, I needed the gorilla that installs the filters at the factory, to close the clamp on mine. This has worked very well on mine.

So I tried that quarter turn trick the first time I changed mine. I had some minor leakage issues with it. The second time I changed it I pulled the o-ring to turn it a quarter turn and my buddy said "that thing isn't square. " I remember having a heckuva time getting the o-ring back in after turning it 1/4 turn the first time. This time when I turned it again (for a total of 1/2 turn) it went right back into the groove fairly easy. no leakage so far.



Maybe I don't understand the 1/4 turn, that does mean to move the sealing surface 90 degrees correct, i. e. the top of the ring is now the side.
