So I replaced the contacts in my starter with the larger ones and that worked about twice now it's making the same clicking sound again. I need to drive this thing cross country in about a week, so I'm just going to get a new starter. Napa has about 8 listed on there site for my truck and they all look about the same to me. My question is this. Is there a place out there selling upgraded starters specifically for the cummins? I would feel much better about buying one from a specialty shop then a off the shelf one.

Thanks

Danny

I bought one from partsamerica (advance auto parts) and haven't had any problems. I think it was just under $200 and was brand new and a lifetime warranty. It had the updated bigger contact on one side.

I had my electrical shop install new contacts in both my 12Vs before they reached 200K. He cleaned and checked the starters for me, but said unless I did a whole lot of starting those starters should go 400-500K. One has 243K and the other 230K with no problems so far.

Larry b never got back to me on some shipping questions I had. So I ended up with a lifetime warranty napa rebuild because I needed it now.

Anyways I guess I never realized how bad my old starter was, because I can't believe my truck could ever turn over as fast as it does now.

So far I'm very happy with the napa starter and you can't go wrong with a lifetime warranty.

Unless you pay for the the faster shipping Larry's will take a while to get to you. I was going to rebuild mine, but after I tore it apart decided I was further ahead to just replace it with a good one than to fight with it. I belive his have the larger contact on both sides. I am guessing that your old stater needed to be torn down and hve the motor itself cleaned and new bruches installed, that is what mine needed and did not have time.
