I had to replace my OE clutch a few weeks back because my latest mods were too much for the OE clutch to handle. After having a shop replace the clutch I started having trouble getting the truck to shift from neutral to any gear selection. The truck would try to lurch a little if you tried to put it in gear with the clutch pushed in. The gears would even grind a little occasionally when I tried to put it in gear. The shop speculated that the additional force needed to activated the Con OFE was too much for the worn OE clutch cylinder (141K miles) to handle.
We went ahead and installed a South Bend clutch cylinder. The problem with the occasion gear grinding may have gone away but the resistance to being put in gear is still there. If I hold in the clutch I can change gears just fine. I can even go from neutral to any gear selection OK if I hold in the clutch. The problem arises when I try to put the truck in neutral, let out the clutch, and then push in the clutch again to put the truck in gear. I have to push in the clutch and try to put the truck in gear gently a few times to get it to go.
The truck had no shifting issues before and the clutch cylinder has been replaced and adjusted every way possible. The problem must be in the clutch assembly in the trans. The problem seems to be sporadic as though the clutch is sticking and not disengaging like it should. The flywheel was checked and machined before the new clutch was installed. Anyone had this problem?
The shop that did the work is reputable and I don't expect to have any problems (spent $8000 so far). I just wanted to get some feedback on the problem with my six speed before I go back to the shop.
