South Bend Flywheel & Clutch Installed ?????

Got my new double disc South Bend installed and all I have to say is WOW.

I am really happy with everything. The rattle is hardly noticeable and personally I think it sounds really cool. Pedal pressure is very good considering what the double disc is. I now can hold all the power I currently have and will have in the near future.

The carnage to my stock clutch was pretty cool. The heat spots on the presssure plate and flywheel were a good indicator of just how much it was slipping. :-laf:-laf

Anyway I wanted to commend South Bend on a great product.

I recently did a southbend DD myself and I had the same crappy heat-spotted flywheel and pressure plate. I think this is a LuK production issue in our year. Was your clutch facing rather worn as well? Mine was showing barely any of the "block cuts. " This thing was slipping at stock power and made the addition of the Smarty all but useless.

In regards to the DD, give it a few hundred miles to really seat in and you'll REALLY love it.

PS. My only singular complaint about the upgraded hydraulics is that the heim end on the clutch master does NOT have a jam nut on the rod. It starts to screw itself in lowering the clutch pedal progressively till you think you broke something and then realize that the clutch pedal is sitting lower than it used to... scared the crap out of me thinking that the slave was hung up or something. ADD A JAM NUT! Otherwise, a marvellously fantastic product.

DD is a great clutch. still love mine... but trust me when I say they get louder with time! I sometimes second guess myself as to whether or not I torqued the flywheel bolts enough! REALLY glad I loctited them... ... I just hope they hold. At idle, my clutch sometimes makes me think it's coming apart in there (ok. . maybe not quite that loud, but I wonder a lot!).

Man I can't want until spring, so my DD can go in!!!

What should the Flywheels bolts be torqued too?

Install a Fluidampr. It will really quiet down the clutch, but you'll still hear it. People will know you have a man's clutch!

The biggest plus the Fluidampr gives? The transmission is so quiet, almost stock quiet when in direct (4th or 5th, depending on trans. ). My NV5600 liked to talk to me quite a bit under load in 5th gear until I got the Fluidampr.

I have been trying to justify the price of the Fluidampr to myself for the past year or two! I was close to buying it one day when a close friend claimed that most of their hype was all from marketing. He had ran one on a 2nd gen but didn't think it was worth the sticker price... . Got me to thinking, and it's just been on the back burner since.

My trans is quiet through and through... even in 5th gear under load. Almost 35k on it now I think..... what kinda noises were you hearing? Gear rattle? Whine? Just wondering...

Thanks for the heads up though!

Just curious what kind of noises you mean? I just installed a southbend in a buddy's truck and it rattles at idle unless you depress the clutch then the noise goes away. Would a Fluidampr fix that?

Sounds like I better add a locknut. I was also wondering about that.

Sometimes at a dead stop it is hard to get the transmission into gear. Is this normal or is there something else that should be done to make operations easier??

All help is greatly appreciated.

you now have about twice the weight of the original clutch so sometimes things are slower. if my truck doesn't go into 2nd gear it will always go into first. you just have to be more patient and you will enjoy the outcome when you add more power.

all those rattles are very minor compared to the old unsprung versions. mine rattles the most when i press the clutch in but still has always made a small amount of noise when in neutral without pushing the clutch in. i have had no increase of noise since i installed mine and zero problems. peter is always trying out new things to keep them quiet and user friendly.
