I finished hooking up my SPA gauges tonight, and I have some questions about programming the unit. On the drive home my pre-turbo temp was reading 80 degrees F at idle and the max I saw at full throttle and 20 psi of boost was 280 degrees F. I think I have found the problem, but I'm not sure. One of the menu items is thr, for thermocouple option on/off. When I first powered up the gauge thr was set to off. The only other setting mentioned in the manual is "on if you are using the optional thermocouple interface to measure temperatures up to 255 deg C using a standard K type thermocouple sensor". So after the temp didn't work at all with "thr off" selected, I changed it to "thr on 255". After getting home, I played with the settings some more and discovered a third thr option, which is "thr 1000". Is this the setting I need for degrees F? It certainly reads a lot better at idle. I wasn't allowed to go for a drive to see if the problem is totally fixed. Wife doesn't understand the need to play. #ad

So far, I am impressed with the quality of the gauge. I am not impressed with the manual. It is very cryptic and hard to follow. For the amount I paid, I would think they could have written a manual specific to the gauge I purchased, rather than a generic manual that covers several different gauges.

Thanks

Greg

thr 1000 IS CORRECT
I am kinda stoked, i have 6 guys already scheduled to install gauges for them in the next 3 weeks, They all love my gauges and they are getting some for themselves... ... .

These are by far the nicest gauges i have ever used and the install and prgrm is really pretty easy, do yourself a favor and wire and on off switch on you pod so you can program the guage without turning off the ignition

SPA web site has some help for the install as well http://www.spatechnique.com

1000 degrees is the cal factor you want for your farenheit settings. Otherwise, your readings are all wrong. On the best price available, the best I found was Diesel Injection Service in Lubbock, Texas. They have a link on this site.

The thing I really like about these gauges is the accuracy. When I had the analog gauges, I thought I was allowing ample time for cool down but now I know I was on the edge. There is no doubt with the digital. Plus they store the peak temps and boost and that is a nice feature.

MCrossley, did HVAC lower his prices on SPA gauges? His prices were NOT the same about a month or two ago when DIS picked up the SPA line.

Lower prices or not, you'd be a LOT better off buying your SPA gauge or anything else from HVAC. I doubt you will get better personal service or experienced help anywhere else.

Briar Hopper, thanks for the endorsement, I appreciate it, I owe you a sarsaparilla #ad

We have dropped our prices as a result of our new lower cost. We are a distributor now and as such enjoy a nice break in price from what we were paying. These gauges have caught fire since we brought them to this market, thanks David_VT #ad

I am getting my guages from Nowell (hvac), and installing them in the next few weeks.
I don't think we can beat the personalized service that Nowell can give us.

I purchased my gauges from Evan, and he helped install them. How much more personal can ya get? Thanks again, Evan!

hey if you can do your own gauges or have someone do them free for you that is great. All of my customers are more than willing to pay for my time, it ain't free. Now I will trade a little if needed for my time, if they can ride my colts any better than me then they will be in the saddle and i'll be putting in their gauges N/C no charge. They are not hard to do, I am always ready to help a little and advise, that is always free of charge, but if I have to do the whole job something has to make it worth my while even if its not money.
About half of my customers could do the job, but their time is worth more than my time, thats cool and I respect that.

I dont think its a crime to pay to have your gauges installed. Cool stuff always comes at a premium, if it didn't it would be cheap.

And no i am not saying overpriced is good
NO NO NO NO
I am saying that a fair price is good, life isn't all about walmart and costco prices

DavidVT... way to go. . thats what this is all about! Having fun and offering to help others is FUN!
We have BOMBing parties about once a month, and only a few times have I worked on my own truck. We have not had any negative comments about these parties. Fun, fun, fun!

MDW,
Check out the instructions at www.tstproducts.com/gauge_install.html They are very clear and cover both 12 and 24 valve trucks. If you still need info. . send me an email and I will try to help.

I installed two sets of these, on on my truck and one on my dads, and we had no real problems. The hardest part was getting a power wire... .

I installed my SPA gauge about 3 weeks ago. There is a 1/8th in. pipe plug near the front of the intake manifold that you can use as a boost source. The only problem I had on my 96 was the pressure transducer is too long to mount directly in this port. I went to a hydraulic supply house and bought a high pressure 1/8th in. street elbow to mount the transducer. With the vibrations our 6Bs can produce I just didn't trust a cast iron galvanized street elbow from the local hardware store.

I hope this helps.

Okay...

here's a dumb one...

What is "shut off temp"? once I get this bad boy wired up?

I'm primarily getting this gauge for just this reason, to know exactly when I can turn it off... secondarily, I'D LIKE TO KNOW HOW CLOSE TO NUCLEAR I COME AT TRIPPLE DIGIT SPEEDS?

MaD MaX

Mad Max,
Here's a quote from the Diesel Injection Service page regarding shutdown temp:

"Allowing the vehicle to idle for a few minutes after its been
running hard or allowing the exhaust temperature to cool to below 500 degrees will greatly reduce the risk of premature turbo failure. "

I guess this sound reasonable.

THX BOATHEAD!

Attention Fellow Pooch-It-Yourselfers.

In being anal AND **** BENT to make sure my SPA DG-111 install is done CLEAN and PERFECT, I'm doing it myself.

Having to get the tools has BEEN A CHORE FOR THIS ENDEVOR, here's what I've had to add to the arsenal:

1/8th NPT Tap

21/64ths Drill Bit or "R" Drill Bit

Molex Pin Extractor "Minifit Junior" 11-03-0044, Found the extractor at
http://www.digikey.com/scripts/US/DKSUS.dll?Detail?Ref=73984&Row=151057

And Then as a 24V'er, so finding a reducer for the boost sensor which is threaded 1/8th BSP has also been fun.

Ultimately BB turned me onto McMaster
http://www.mcmaster.com/

to get an adapter down to 1/8th NPT, aslo a great place to get TOOLS THAT ARE HARD TO FIND. . ARRRGH ARRRRGH ARRRRGH!

then I turned to Pegasus Racing Supply for a 1/8th NPT Male to 1/8th BSP Female adapter.
http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/

BOY, THIS HAS BEEN FUN...

Hopefully I'm preventing anyone else for underestimating the "goodies" needed to do a "SANO" instal themselves.

Good Luck.

Special Thanks to BB for help w/ this one and Other Tool related questions.

The NOTORIOUS;

Mad MAX
