Replaced left front hub and bearing assembly at 40,000. I thought right front was going out at 45,000, so I picked one up. Turns out it was the U-Joint. Yes, my diagnostics are not good. So, since I was in there anyhow, replaced 'em both. Question is, should I keep the old one on board as an emergency spare? Or just toss it in a corner in the garage.

i keep the spare in the garage. ITs to heavy, and takes lots of tools to replace it, therefore i wouldn't be able to do it on the side of the road.

Side note i did go about 20 miles after one bearing separated. It was obvious, in hindsight .
Truck jumped sideways about half a lane at 60mph, the a slight left pull with a hellva grinding noise. lol!!
Almost had to change my pants. Kind similar to a frt tire blow out at highway speed. But if one it internally splits then you have control with some correction.

I can change it pretty darn quick, but still never plan to keep spare in truck.

Kinda what I figured. I don't have air on the truck, and NAPA had it the same day I called. Especially nice to know I could drive it to a safe place to wait for a tow or whatever.

Thanks

There is a good thread that is about 2 weeks old about greasing these hubs when you have the rotor off... I have over 100K miles on some that have been cared for... . BTW almost the same information is in the current TDR...

Just my thoughts...
