Spare parts / Mexico

Driving to southern Mexico and back this winter a 5k round trip. Would like to anticipate the most needed spare parts. On the other hand there are always large cities within a days drive. Wll be driving from El Paso - Durago - Mazatlan - Guadalahara and on to Oaxaca. I'm tempted to just go and let fate take care of its self. The VP44 and fuel pump were replaced 12K ago and I've got only 65K. But suggestions for what parts to carry would be appreciated.

I've taken my 05 3500 into mexico a few times..... I've not gone as far as you...

I personally wouldn't take a thing but a good spare tire...

Petro Mex is the only station, they sell tons of diesel, I just wouldn't worry... besides on every corner is a mechanic who has worked on diesels. . smile. .

Fuel filters ,lift pump and crank sensor. Do a good under car inspction well before you leave,torque bolts, inspect suspension and drivetrain,TIRES.

diesel pickups and cars are not sold in Mexico by law. Engine parts that are dodge only could be a hassle. I got paranoid and put on FASS fuel pump at 63000 for this years trip south and carry serpentine , radiator hoses,air, and fuel filter. Enjoy $1 a gallon cheaper diesel. I haven't had fuel probs in Mex with my 04. If you are not used to Mexico watch out for gas station tricks- pump not reset to 0. claiming large bill was smaller denom, stopping pumping and restarting. . Pay with pesos to avoid lousy exchange and always get out of truck to watch pump. I have not had probs but have heard of many and some gas stations are notorius for miscalibrated pumps and thievery/short changing. Have fun. Jim

Iwonder if I may be too paranoid; the intank pump is only a yr old with about 10K. So far I haven't heard of one actually failing. I solved the low pressure problem with the Vulcan big line conversion . I run a steady 7 or 8lbs now.
How far south do you drive? Do you have that intank pump to sell me for a spare?
And have you checked out the Woodall's rv forum esp. the rving in Mexico and S. A.

I have made a similar trip in the winter of 05-06 and drove to

Panama last winter. All of the above are good advice, will need more spares if you plan to off-road. Remember that Cummins parts can be obtained, even if by order at most ports, lots of boats use these engines. I had no serious failures. Mexicans can fix anything, use a lot of commercial diesels and welding is very cheep. Relax and have fun! GBaines

In Mexico there are many PEMEX stations, but the ones with Diesel have a black sign board 2-3 signboardss below the Pemex sign. "YEANO" means fill it up and the sign on the pump says to verify 0 in spanish. Generally they frown on you filling up yourself. Take some extra oil as well as xmission fluid. Fuel pressure gauge mounted on dash. Treat the Mexican the way they would want to be treated. Been going to Mexico since the sixties, watch the big cities they will rip you off. The farmers will give you the shirt off their back.

I'd take a new set of hoses and antifreeze.
