2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Spare Tire Carrier

Looking for some ideas on carrying my spare in the bed. I will be putting a Road Armor rear winch bumper on with a winch and will have to remove my stock spare. I have 285 Toyo Mud Terrains (5 on factory aluminum wheels) and will end up having to carry my 5th MT spare. I normally run around town with just the factory spare under the truck, but on any longer trips put the 5th MT in the bed.



I already have a tool box in the bed just behind the cab. Not an option to remove. Anybody have any good durable spare tire mounts that can handle alot of off roading?

Carli suspension has put together an in bed mount that is completely removable for a fully useable bed when the spares are not needed. I don't have any close ups but here is the idea.

The tire gates do not have the best fit,so if you plan on doing your own install plan a bit of extra time and have plenty of tools on hand. They also block the access to change t/light bulbs(modify the gate before install ) and are also a bit hard on the bed if you do any real off roading. The bedsides are not all that strong to begin with.

Hmm. . I saw one of these on a Ford just the other day. I beleive it was the VT Series. Looked kind of interesting, but I had the same thoughts that Bob mentioned about mounting security and how well the bed sides would handle that much weight (spare & jack).



Years ago used a bed mount bracket that was more or less "L" shaped for a spare mount and it kept the spare upright and out of the way. Unfortunately, since it was bolted through the inside lip on the bed it tore that area up quite severely. Is anyone aware of a vertical spare mount that is robust enought to handle alot of off road use? The other mounts are cool if you don't need the bed space. I do. Two dog kennels and plenty of other things go in the bed.

I made my own verticle spare mount in my 94. It has a spare fuel tank where the spare mounts. Since I used to take it on very remote off road trips I also carried 2 spares. One mouted on each side back corner for easy access when the truck was loaded for camping. I had attatchment points on the floor and on the bed side innerwall with doubler plates for added support. The bed rails are too weak for sure. I made a quick spinner handle for tool less removal. It has held up for many years of off roading under the stess that a 315 tire will dish out. The tire is a very tight fit with the shells upper door. during extreme flexing there will be contact. I ended up going to a Lexan door to save glass shattering during those contacts :-laf

Many years ago I carried my spare in front of the truck on a tire carrier bolted to the frame of my F250. I never had a heating problem and I hauled a 10. 5 ft cab-over-camper 70% of the time.
