2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Spare tire gone

I was under my ram on saturday running some wires for an electric winch. When I noticed my spare tire was gone. The cable snapped. The stealer service manager says it is not repeat not covered under warranty. Has this happened to anyone else and if so was it covered under warranty?

That's a tough call on that one for the warranty coverage. With a Y2K truck and depending on the month that it was built, you might be out of your 3/36,000 bumper to bumper. :{



I know that doesn't help get your spare back, but as they say, poop happens.

These spares have a tendency to disappear...



Get youself one of those spare tire locks that wrap around the winch handle and bolt up to the rim--if the cable ever does snap, that lock will hold it on

Sounds like someone needed one more tire to complete there new set. Pretty common occurrence here in the so called great state of California. Why buy new tires when people are driving around with an extra there not using, frickin dirt bags.

I would tend to believe the 5 finger discount, it would be hard to lose that going down the road and not know it. Wouldn't it???

Earlier this year I had a flat tire just before the Sprague rest area east of Spokane. I pulled into the rest area and when I started to lower my spare tire I noticed I had no spare tire!!:--)



Kind of gives you a bad feeling being far from home and without a spare.



Luckily the first person that stopped with 8 lug wheels (Ford) was willing to loan me there spare tire so I could get into Spokane to replace my flat tire. There are some good people still out there.



I don't know how long the spare had been gone.

Also if you think about it you can locate 4 Dodge trucks or 4 alike trucks, probably in the same parking lot, in a matter of a few minutes. Steal 4 already mounted and balanced with matching rims in less than a minute each, for a grand total of lets say 20 minutes, drive home throw them on your ride in less than 1 hour. FOR FREE, seems alot faster than leaving your truck at a tire shop all day and having to pay hundreds of dollars. And have all that money and time left over for lots of Budweisers. Wow good idea, any one want to buy a set of new tires, I have a couple extra sets on the side of my trailer next to my tail lights, bumpers and aluminum can can(bud cans)... .....

A member here posted a couple years ago about cruising down the interstate and hearing a loud bump-bump as his trailer ran over the spare. Not all missing spares are stolen...

I have a spare lock that suspends a steel rod from the tire winch crank tube and runs through the rim. Tire/wheel ain't coming off easy.

removed spare

Hey guys just do what I did to my 2002 3500,I removed the spare from the depths of hell because thats what it is when you have to remove it in some of the places I go,crawling in mud,horse crap and any other stuff I don't want to bring back into the cab. I have not done it yet but it is lying in the bed under alot of junk waiting to be locked onto a spare tire rack in my bed attatch to my tool box. I also carry a tire plug kit for those times when stuffing in a plug is faster and easier than changing it.

Beware of the spare if you haul a camper that extends to the end of the tailgate, you can't turn the lowering crank with the tailgate down. Carry a pipe wrench, you'll have to crawl underneath and turn the rod with it. I lucked out and had one with me...

If the tire is not snugged up tight the tire will dangle making the cable rub on the sides of where it comes out of the retractor. When the cable has rubbed enough, it will break. Mine did. Nobody stole mine, the cable just broke. Tighten up the cables and maybe put a couple of extra straps on the spare.



It is a safety hazard having your spare tire falling off going down the road. They should warrantee it, but it's not worth the hassle.

I had one of these "locks" on my truck and the spare was stolen. The best solution is a cable Krytonite for motorcycles. You lock and drag the spare along if your winch lets go. But be sure to lube and test the lock at oil changes. Two birds one rock.

I don't recall anyone spating that all missing spares are stolen, here is one of those misinterpretations I was talking about. Lets see if this one is removed also... ... Some people are just to serious. hint hint... .....

I checked the cable it's frayed doesn't look cut. Dodge and dealer both said not covered. I had to prove someone didn't steal it or I didn't run over a boulder 4 wheeling with this expensive toy. I spend all this money on one of their vehicles you think they would give me the benefit of the doubt for a couple hundred bucks at worst. I even said I'd settle for a used rim and worn tire and meet them halfway. All i got was no way.





Pitt Bull I'm located in Pittsburgh which is not really a high crime area.

That bites. Y2K Ram, huh? If a spare from a '98 2500 fit, I'd sell you mine, since it's still unused and I don't need it with my 19. 5s.

When I took delivery of my ordered '84 Ford (befor Dodge had a diesel), I noticed that there was a cable and lock on the spare. I commented that that was pretty good of them to add that. The guy I was dealing with said that some months earlier they came to work one morning and there was not a spare on any new truck in stock. After that, one of the first thing that happens when a new truck comes in is the cable lock goes on. -----I am still using that same cable and lock.
