I am looking to install a Transfer Flow rear Aux fuel tank.

To do so requires that I relocate the spare.

Has anyone put the spare on a holder in front of the grill?

If so, where did you get the holder.

And, does it effect the air flow/cooling?

Since I pull big trailer's and 5th wheels, keeping the engine cool while climbing long hills in high temps (118 in Vegas last week) I do not want to interfere with cooling.

Thanks

Bob

I've seen spare tire mounts that connect to your receiver that swing out of the way enough to open the tailgate, not in the way of a 5er. I'd go that route rather than the front mainly for weight concerns. Tire in the front won't raise your coolant temp since our cooling systems are overbuilt but I guarantee it will raise your intake temps due to less air flow though the intercooler resulting in higher egts.

Illflem......

I've been looking for a "receiver-style" spare tire holder for a while now and I cannot find anyone who markets them. Do you know of any companies or are these all homemade?

The only problem I have seen with spare tire mounts that are attached to the back like on a lot of popular SUV's is that an independant test showed that spare tires mounted in that position will cause substantial damaged to the back of the vehicle if you accidently back into something.

This was on 20/20 a couple monthes ago in a SUV test. The test was performed by the NHTSB.

Just something to keep in mind.

Brobeson: You have a 3500... you're already carrying 2 spare tires. Seriousely, I'm considering getting a Transfer Flow and if I end up getting the one that mounts in place of the spare I'm really going to consider not carrying the spare (I also have a 3500). I figure they're load range E tires... the 2500's have the same tires and you'll overweight the truck before the tires so I figure it's good enough to "limp" to the nearest tire store... even fully loaded.

"Panic merchants" I call them (Dateline, 20/20, etc). Heck, I wonder what would happen if you backed a Durango into a wall? Hmmm, reckon it would do more damage if there were a spare tire holder back there? LOL!!

Back on topic, when I was growing up, we had a '68 or '69 Ferd Ranger 3/4 ton that had the spare in front of the grille. It looked cool! But I agree it would be detrimental to EGT's... too bad.
