If any of you are muscle car fans, maybe you can help. I have always wanted to make my exhaust on my old gasser into a flame thrower. How is this done. Spark plug in the pipe, another coil, what else?

You need to mount plugs in the tips first of all. Then put another coil near the rear. Wire a switch to your stock coil that can allow you to switch between the front and the rear. Becuase in order to get the extra fuel for the pipe fire you actualy have to kill the motor. So when you flip the switch it turns the motor coil off with the engine at 3K or so RPM and all the fuel goes out the pipes and lights up(the rear coil has to have the signal from the turning distributor to spark more than once). Looks cool but is VERY hard on rings as your just washing the cylinders down with gas. And if you let the motor die while your flaming the fire will travel up the pipes and blow up in the muffler lol VERY LOUD. I highly recomend flowmasters if you do this. A friend of mine had round flowmasters from all the explosions we had learning how to get his flamers to work.

That was the coolest thing to cruise in, an 84 Bronco II 4x4 with a 302 and flaming echo chambers lol. Fun to get into a good race(thing ran pretty good for a 302) then light the pipes on the shutdown.

My buddy Steve had a GTX (383) that he did this on. He blasted a prostitute right off a bus-bench one night... I will never forget it! LOL Never did damage, and he used it a LOT.

To get a signal from the distributor, which wire would I tap into? I know that the HEI distributor on the 81' Chevy we have has a hookup for a tach. However, I am thinking about putting this on a 79' CJ7 with straight out pipes. What would I tap into on this distributor(it has 3 wires going to it)?

or no more hooker " headers"

hehe

Should be the wire going to the negative side of your coil, I believe that does all the switching from the pickup in the distributor.

How about just teeing a propane line into your exhaust near the tailpipe with it's own igniter? Seems like you could get the same effect without the associated engine damage.

Now you've really got my attention! Can someone give a run down of the parts that I would need to make such a propane system. What kind of tank? What kind of tip to shoot propane? What kind of igniter?
Shootin' flames out of my stacks on my Dodge would look really mean!
What about using something besides propane? Alcohol maybe?(not the drinking kind)

smoker, this is all just conjecture, I have never done this nor known anyone who has. I think that you will only need a 5 gallon BBQ tank, regulator and solenoid valve to turn it off and on. Don't know why you would even need a nozzle. The thing you would need to be inventive about is the igniter. I would think that it needs to be at the end of the pipe because the propane needs oxygen to ignite, wires running up your stack might not look good. Anything that makes a spark could be used for an igniter. Things that come to mind are spark plug with coil, or you could modify an igniter from a natural gas stove or hot water heater. As far as altinate fuel, propane would probably be cheapest and easyest. Have fun.

I've seen a few of those big rig pullers that shoot flames when they want. Somebody told me that they put small alcohol burners in the stacks. Not sure.
How would you get oxygen in the stacks? I mainly just truck pull with mine and there tends to be a whole lot of smoke. I don't know how I would get air in the stacks. Any ideas?

The propane would work, just a 1/4 pipe into the exhaust about a foot from the tip. Put a 90 degree elbow facing out. Use a pezio igniter (like on your LP grille) and keep the engine running to force the gas out.
A 20# (5 gallon) LP tank will work, but don't use a regulator. Make sure the POL or Acme fitting has a excess flow valve in it. Set the tank valve at about 40% flow and let'er rip. Should have put this under "BAD TO THE BONE" Have a Ball!

Describe POL or ACME fitting. What is it and where could I get one? How would I know when the tank is 40% open? How about a solenoid that will operate it from the cab?

How about a small propane bottle from something like a camp stove or Coleman lantern? You know, it is one of those little green tanks. That would be easy to hide and keep out of the way. Also, how would I make a tip to make a wider flame. Will a 1/4in. pipe be enough for a good wide flame to fill up a 5" stack?

You people have too much time on your hands.
Your going to blow yourself up.

All Right, You guys got me thinking...
I was reading in another post about smoking, Pedestrians and bicyclists. . Wouldn't it be possible to Inject a bit of Diesel fuel Post-Turbo (I hear 300-600*F is norm), or in a gassers Header/Manifold. Wouldn't the heat be enough to Make a hole bunch of black smoke? Diesel Smoke would be safer than Flames, but would look funny on a gasser.
I think a Dodge/Cummins w/Stacks would look cool, just pouring out smoke through an intersection, or heck,, Just about anywhere. . #ad

Any Ideas?
