All,

I've read several threads about placement of subwoofers under the rear seat and different audio modifications. I am frustrated with the shallow mounting depth offered in the stock speaker locations in my 2nd gen. I also don't want to go to a kickpanel mount because I value the room for my feet.

What I am considering is replacing my center console (between the two front seats) with a custom box that would house two component speakers and a subwoofer (small). I am not after imaging and really only want the ability to play clean, higher volume music.

The question is: has anyone done something like this?

The idea in my head is to have the two speakers firing forward towards the dash and the subwoofer firing down towards the floor.

Any audio gurus out there that can tell me if this is going to sound like absolute crap?

I just installed a Sony headunit and pioneer speakers from Crutchfield and the sound quality/volume is disappointing. I know I can add an amp but I don't want to just start throwing power at speakers that aren't going to do the job.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

John

Are you planning on running your other speakers in conjunction with this center console?

i would try first with bass blockers in your current speakers and a separate subwoofer, that is what i run and it works perfectly fine. my biggest problem was when i turned up the volume the bass distorted the four main speakers... . so in went the bass blockers.

Thanks for the suggestion! No, I would not run my current speakers with this setup. This would almost be a "boombox" within the truck.

I use the bassblockers in our Jeep and they work pretty well.

One of the things that I'm thinking of from high-end audio is "off-axis" listening. In the stock locations you are listening to the speakers closest to you very "off-axis" but there are several speakers relatively "on-axis". In the setup I'm thinking of both speakers will be very "off-axis". I'm trying to think of whether or not they will sound like crap, even with good speakers.
