Does anybody have a part number or name for the sensor that goes on top of the diff housing ?
Thanks

Since it is magnetic, it might have a piece of metal stuck to it causing the issue. Any auto parts store should have one.

I have one brand new unopen in the box. I ordered it off rock auto last month but needed to buy locally for a trip. I'll sell it to you for a good price.

Sometimes the connector is dirty and needs cleaning and sometimes it not seated properly and too far from the tone ring (on the carrier) to get a good signal.

Not wishing to hijack, but along the same line of inquiry, can I use my '96 axle sender to run both my speedo and my rear-wheel-only ABS? GAmes pointed out that it does both tasks in a '98. The reason being I wish to replace my NV4500 and factory t-case with an NV5600 and NP205 (ford). I bought a digital sender that will supposedly fit the mechanical (cable) speedo drive of the NP205 but don't see why I should bother if I already have a tone ring sender in the rear diff. I believe a similar issue occurs when upgrading from a DLD factory t-case to a DHD? No speedo sender on the DHD.

I'd venture no. I looked at the wiring diagram. The rear wheel speed sensor connects to the ABS module. From there a vehicle speed signal (wire) goes the the PCM (powertrain control module). The ABS module also connects to the CCD BUS (the network that connects all the computers). In 98+ trucks the instrument cluster is electronic and connects to the CCD BUS to receive gauge data but I don't remember how it works in a 96. Is there an actual speedo cable to the instrument cluster?
