Can someone tell me what the heck a P 0500 code means to my truck? I know it's a "Speed sensor" problem but what are the possible causes, how can I check or reset the engine light and code???
:{ On page 25-10 of the 2000/2001 Factory Service Manual, P0500 code is listed twice.
1st one says (No Vechicle Speed Sensor Signal / No vechicle speed sensor signal detected during road load conditions. )
2nd one says ( No Vechicle Speed Sensor Signal / A vehicle speed signal was not detected)
Your quickest way to trouble shoot is to answere one question. Does the speedometer work? If yes then maybe there is a signal lost to something inside the computer. If no then you will need to pull the sensor at the back axle and meter it out to see if it is ok. Could be a broken wire some where also.
Did you have any maintenance done in that area that might have contributed to the problem. Maybe a wire got snagged.
I’m wondering if I triggered the code by running the engine at 1200rpm (parked in neutral) for an extended time while warming up one cold morning. What do ya think?
I doubt the high idle caused the code. In the past, I used a homemade high idle stick for warm ups, usually at about 1200 rpms, never set a code. Use the BD brake for quick warm ups if you are not already, your engine will be happier .
