Help out a computer illiterate! I downloaded Firefox and it is much faster. How do you get rid of IE? (Windows '98 if that makes a difference) I get error messages from IE evertime I visit a favorite. I've gone to Add/Remove Programs but removing IE is not a listed option. Just restore and repair and some other that I don't recall. Also can't get IE off the toolbar. Any help would be much appreciated.

You can't really uninstall IE. That's the problem with Microsoft integrating the web browser into the OS... however, you should be able to delete all your icons referring to IE just by right-clicking them and then selecting delete. Before you stop using IE, though, get back some of the resources it's using by clicking on tools then options and deleting all your temporary files, cookies, history, etc. The other thing you should do is download Spybot Search and Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html which will get rid of all the adware/spyware on your machine. That's quite often the cause of a lot of the errors people experience in IE, and overall system performance degredation. There is more you can get rid of, but it's not really neccessary. . just use Firefox and tell Micro$oft to stick it in their arse! :)

Not to contradict thoughts on the subject, but yes you can remove Internet Explorer because Microsoft says you can... ... but they only did so after a very long drawn out battle with the US District court and that judge told them they WOULD tell folks how to get the job done.

Okay, here are a few items in the closet.

IE 6. x versions

IE 4. 5 versions (originally supplied with Win98) but you most likely have updated it since then.

-or-

If either of those two sort of make your eyes swim,

there is an automated way to do it too.

I have done all three. The last one is the fastest, and equally as efficient.

Removing IE did NOT have any detrimental effects on running the Windows O. S. , nor did it effect any of the applications on my PCs.

However, after a couple of years, I just simply gave up on doing it.

Why?

1) Well, every time you visit the Windows Update Center and ALLOW it to work behind the scenes, it will reinstall IE 6. x for you. You can circumvent this action by closely monitoring what files you are installing. But you have to do research on each update to see what it does. Time consuming, I'm not willing to do it anymore. At age 62, I am mellower ;)

2) There are web sites out there that are programmed only for IE 5. x and above. Other browsers will view them, but with sometimes confusing results. FireFox is the first optional browser I have used that renders all IE web pages very closely to how IE does. I like Opera, but they got too expensive for me.

3) You can leave IE alone and just tell your new browser that it is the DEFAULT browser. That is how I am doing things these days. Fire Fox is my default browser, but when I go to my finance institution to unmangle my checking account, I use IE 6. x to do the job simply because they don't ***** about a "foreign browser".

Caveat Emptor: Or to paraphrase- To Each His Own

The reasons you gave are just some of the reasons I said it was not removable... but you are right, technically it is removable... sort of...

speeding Things Up!

I have had a 640/256 ADSL line here at home for two years. I have never felt like it was much more than "a little" faster than my 56K dialup modem I had been using.

Well, yesterday I was looking to see if any one was offering anything faster for the same money I am paying now. Low and behold, I see that QWEST is offering 1. 5 mips service for the same price I am paying for 640 kBs which is $28. 00 a month. A phone call to them lets me learn all I need to do is buy a new modem for $59. 99 and plug it in. The teckie says "Oh, by the way, you will have to call your ISP and tell them you have a faster line now".

Okay... . So I do that. When I inform the ISP tech support fella he says "No one ever told us you had a 640 line. We have you locked in at 256 and it is costing you MORE to support that slow rate than if you were using 1500!

Well, I am really ****** to find this out. I have called in and complained of the slow speed I get and they always told me it was "a bad line with QWEST, call them".

Yeah, uh huh.

The end result is, my rate per month drops 5 bux and my speed goes UP by 6 times!

Go figure.....
