SPEED

Last night coming home from West VA, traffic on I-95 was moving was moving at a good pace ( fast ). I had no trouble keeping up, or even passing. But a question did come to mine. Does these trucks cut-out at high speed?. My car fuel injectors cut-out around 115 mph, and come back-in around 95 mph. I couldn't find out last night as my family was with me, and there was to much traffic to take the chance. So I was just wandering if, and at what speed these truck's cut-out?.

These things don't cut out, they just start to starve. Nothing much happens except more mashing on the loud pedal is just exercise.

No... . My understanding is every diesel motor must have a governor to keep the motor from overspeeding. Without a governor the motors RPM will continue to climb until it self destructs. I assume there is a pre-set speed at which the governor is set, but I don't know where it is set at.

there is no gov. on the speed, but there is one on the RPM, so when you hit the red line, thats all she wrote

the redline on the 24v is 3400rpm. which with my 6speed with 3. 54's is around 115mph

I have seen 118 on my speedo, which is VERY fast once you factor in the 285's, and had not hit the governor.

There is a fuel reduction/limiter that kicks in around 112 on the 2001 trucks at least, maybe the 2000s too. This was discussed in thread a while back. Someone figured out which wire to disconnect (speedo feed) and the truck ran right up to redline in 6th like no tomorrow. With the wire hooked up it lost steam above 110, which is 10mph shy of redline (3400rpm = 121mph with 3. 54 axle & 285s).

I have gotten mine up to 118 but I can tell it starts cutting out at 112, more than what wind resistance will cause (yes I know drag increases exponentially).

You know the thought has crossed my mind when traveling home after the late shift on an almost deserted 295. However, it always seems just about the time I think about it, I catch a glimmer or reflection off one of those blue & grey ghosts sitting behind a sound barrier wall or down in the dip of the median. I then think about my past encounters and say to myself "I betcha it would ... ... I betcha it would", then I look down to make sure I do have the cruise set on 65 and SMILE. #ad

If there's some sort of governor on the thing, I sure haven't noticed. I was cruising along I70 a few weeks ago, cruise set @ 78, when some guy in an 01 3500HO just flew by me. I looked up, and he was egging me on. Not being one to deny a fellow Rammer, I jumped on it to catch up with him. When I hit 115, I was pushing that annoyoing redline, and he was still pulling away! I had never pushed my truck that hard, but I was all smiles as we passed a state trooper a few miles after the race ended at 75. Thank God for radar detectors!

I Know I-295 well, since I live 4 miles from the west end of it. And I know just what you mean, Not just the state boys, But those Henrico boys, They know every place on 295 to hide. Well maybe someday I see what mine will do, maybe someday soooooooooonnnnnnnn.

You would think the state fellas would have a monopoly on I-295, but it seems like when the local fellas (Prince George, Hopewell, Chesterfield,& Henrico) need some extra revenue, they know where there's easy pickin's. Makes it hard to do those maintenance things like "Blowing the cobwebs out". When I was a kid, I can remember my Dad saying "Hold on, I need to blow the carbon out", and Mom would close her eyes. The next thing you heard, was that 56 Caddy just a singing! #ad
