I just had a question that I figure if it could be fixed you guys would know. We have had an NV5600 in our 96 Ram 2wd delivery truck for three or four years and have lived with having no speedo. I was just wondering if there is any way to get the speedo to work since there is hole for the speedometer drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If your truck was originally a 4500, the speed sensor in the differential is the signal generator. If it was an auto, then there is an output speed sensor in the tail housing of the auto. I have replaced two instrument clusters because the speedometer died also. Hope this helps.

I have seen gps operated speedos... ... ... if you were up to adding an external speedo.

The way you worded the post you may be thinking of a cable driven speedometer. These are electronic. The wiring should already be there.

JTH is basically saying there's nothing on the transmission to plug his speedo sensor wiring into. . . it's because Dodge switched to using the ABS signal from the rear axle for speedometer operation starting in '98 or so. I assume the '96 has a tone ring in the rear axle and JTH could splice his original speedo sensor harness into the wiring from the rear axle.

I guess you are right Vaughn, it has been a long time since cables were used. As far as the Dodge trucks are concerned though, my only experience is with the auto transmision and have had no occasion to mess with the speedometer.

Do all of the later models, auto or manual, use the rear axle?
