so i bought the truck with a non functioning spedo, i replaced the sender on the trans and only lightened my wallet by $50. i followed all the wires, and everything seems to be inorder. Since i already have a togle switch for the overdrive, is there any reason i can't put in a cluster from a older truck with a cable drive speedo? i think it will work on the transmission end, how 'boout in the cluster? anyone had theirs apart and can tell me if the rest of the harness will plug in? is there anything else that gets signal from the VSS? i don't have cruise, either. only got stopped once this summer (+20 mph) no ticket, but i hate to risk it any longer.

thanks, kent

The cruise control gets its signal from the VSS & I think that is it. I don't know if the harness will plug into the old type cluster.

Check the part going into the transmission that has the gear on it. I've heard of them grenading. Also check the drive gear on the transmission output shaft- they can wear as well. Did you replace the pigtail that plugs into the VSS? The little holes it plugs into can get out-of-round and not carry a good signal.

Make sure the adaptor (if you have one- it is a metal elbow with gears inside) has the entire shaft going into the transmission- I have one that had been snapped off. Also check to be sure the output side spins when you turn the input side. Basically, make sure everything is there and in working order. The cables have their share of problems, in my experience.

Mine had the gear slipping on the transmission tail shaft. It is held in place by a sleeve on each side of it and over time wears and allows the gear to slip. My local transmission shop gave me a shim to place between the sleeve and the gear to tighten things up a bit. Has worked well now for over a year. When you pull the gear out of the side of the transmission just stick your finger in the empty hole and see if you can turn the gear on the shaft, if so it is slipping.

This has to be one the worst things about our trucks mine stopped working so I unplugged it at the transmission and put some electric gel on it and it worked for a while then acted up for a little while then all of a sudden it started working again and has worked ever since. I bought the truck used and the speedo worked when I bought it and it had 85000 on the clock who knows if it acted up for the previous owner and if it did how many miles are on it. I bought it off of a used car lot and the dealer couldn't tell me anything imagine that. as far as putting a speedo out of an older truck I don't think it will work with out redoing the entire guage cluster because there is a circuit board on the back of the speedo not sure what every thing does. Just put a hub odometer on your rear just like a big truck it won't help you know how fast your going but you will be able to keep track of milage.
