so the day after four wheeling my truck for a few hours, and hitting alot of mud puddles, the speedo wont stay still. I was going down the freeway at 75 like i usually do when it started 'bouncing' from 60 to 80 ish. it still works, and only does it at high speeds but it makes me wonder if i got mud into something on the trans... any ideas?

probly the gearing in the speed sensor that mounts to the TransferCase. if you were bouncing much at all, these old truck dont like that. id remove it a take it apart check the gear.

Disconnect it and clean out the connections, and see if it works. If that dont work, you will likely need a new VSS.

hey daniel, where can you find a new VSS? is the VSS just the electronic sensor ontop of the gear reducer? if so, where can i find a new reducer??

I've got a 93 and whenever it rains the speedo will either not work at all or bounce all over the place. I have replaced the instument guages, and the sending unit still no change. I have lived with this for years and don't know what to look at next

Sargent... I had the same problem when it snows. I think that the boot that seals the sensor on the TC must come loose or wear down or something. Then water or salt or what have you gets in there and shorts it out.

Whenever I have speedo problems the vss is the first place i look. Reason? i think that that's a stupid design, really it's just a mechanical on/off switch that sends pulses to the pcm. I would have thought they'd have a different design than that, i think i like the old cable right to the speedo better. Sure was more reliable anyways...

for any of yall that need new VSS, RockAuto Parts Catalog, what WJones mentioned, has em for bout $25.

thanks again WJones

just scroll down and click on "Dodge", then the year of you truck, in my case "1993", then the model, in my case "W250", then the motor "5. 9 Diesel" its the sencond one down i think, then go to the "electrical" section, theres a lot of diffferent electrical sections, its first one just plain "electrical", then its all the bottom of that "Vehicle Speed Sensor". hope that helps yall some.

thanks alot. i took the truck to the car wash and thurowly sleaned out the undercarrage and it seemes to work ok now. still havn't cleaned it out, but i will when it so inspires me. thanks again

My speedo bounces all around like that sometimes as well, and then quit working the other day, i went under her to look at something else and noticed it was just "dangling" by the wires. i guess whatever hold that sensor to the gears is gone... what is it and where do i get another one? i slid it back on that gear and it worked just fine, but its dangling again today...

Bernie - look at this link.

Your sig does not say if you have a manual or auto transmission. If you are running a manual and cleaning the sensor does not help do a search regarding the bolt that holds the output shaft to the transmission - that is also a problem area. If dont have any luck there I can post the problem/fix again.

I have a '92 with the bouncing speedo needle problem, only when I have the engine under load. Any help to trouble shoot. The speed sensor has been replaced, stopped the problem for about a month.

Bernie- there should be a half moon shaped bracket holding your speedometer gear assembly into the transmission tail housing. There is a bolt that holds it on. If you dont have either of these, I have a spare set up at home.
