Sounds like a vehicle speed sensor. On my '02 it is on top of the back axle, older models have one there and one on the transmission i think. Hopefully someone who knows more will speak up. Good luck!

A 97 manual trans 2wd or 4wd, don't know about autos, has the speed sensor on the transmission or transfer case. Not hooked to brake or ABS. ABS sensor is on the top of the axle housing. I think you have two problems.

BTW, I had a speedo needle acting up a few years ago and I ignored it, then it finally quit altogether. When I finally replaced the sensor the odometer portion didn't work anymore. The fluctuating pulses of the bad sensor had burned up the motor that turns the little number wheels. I had to replace the speedometer. My 660k+ truck shows about 365k.

Not quite certain on a '97, but on my '01, as stated previously the problem was the rear wheel speed sensor located on the rear diff. About $40 from the dealer and cured all the above mentioned issues.

lights

Had a hell of a problem with that, sensor on the rear Diff check that for output, wheel sensors, check that on mine I only had rear wheel ABS, Also Abs switch under the driver side battery tray, also Vaccum switch mounted on or near the firwall, also brake fluid flush did that, also my cruise control did not work either! another switch under the dash they checked, also do a loose wire or bad connection search. On the ABS controller on the drivers side above the engine fuse box, diconnect the bigcoupler and check the resistance of the farthest right hand pair [should be 1800 0hms] pull off the right smaller connector and check both pairs top and bottom wires [should be around 1100 ohms] Zero ohms on either one show a badsenor or open circuit. Left and right speed sensors are exactly the same part number. went thru all is stuff and the ABS light brake light and cruise control started working again what a night mare Grumpy John 4X4:D

thanks for the input we figured that is what it is but were not sure we were in a big rush to get a hitch and a cap on the trruck before he left so he didnt have time to mess with it. it is a 2wd and he told me that when he hits a decent sized bump it kicks it out of cruise and the brake and abs light comes on. sounds like the sensor on the rear axle.

again thanks he greatly appreiciates it since he has no computer.

sounds like the connector at the rear end have him pull it a part and spray some wd 40 or contact cleaner

Be careful with WD40 on electric stuff. I read somewhere on here that a buildup of WD40 will effect the conductivity of the metal. Kinda coats it and insulates it.

It does say it's a contact cleaner although I prefer the real thing (contact cleaner)
