For years the speedo has stuck in damp/cold weather. Usually, one sound smack on the dash gets it going. But, this morning no worky. How should I begin troubleshooting if it doesn't "wake up?"

Disconnect cable at trans , with someone watching the speedo turn cable by hand to see it moves & in what direction , then you may find that its the cable inards , you can buy just the inside piece , then when you go to put back in , put on speedo cable lube , most offen some type of graphite .
When you go to turning by hand and find that it does not work the speedo , pull the inner cable out , then you need to take the other end off the speedo head so that you get both parts out , if its a broke cable ,
Make sure to look at the full length of the outside of the cable and if you see that there is any kinks , sharp bends , or rust , the plastic wearing off , replace the hole thing .
This all if you find 2 pieces on the inside , it still could be the speedo head , but the cable is the most comin .

There is also a speed sensor on the transmission a kinda mag pickup unit cost about 70 at napa mine stopped working and i thought about it that it was cable driven which it is but it is also wired with this sensor too it is called the Speed Sensor
