Speedo Tampering?

I am wanting to put a new speedo into the truck. Is this a problem? If the vehicle has 250,000 on it and the speedo from the junk yard I put in has 120,000 is that not the same as winding the current one back in the feds eyes? What if I put in a brand new one from Autometer? That poses the same problem. Has anyone dealt with this before? Thanks,

I think it only becomes a problem if your selling it and claiming the new mileage as actual.

As stated above, it's not a problem unless you are out to cheat someone. Then jail time. I operate in this capacity often as the odometer(s) will frequently fail in the school bus. We simply start from zero (with the new unit) and make notes in the records that the head is replaced due to failure.



It's interesting to note that the Ohio State Highway Partol will use the NEW odometer as the actual milage as opposed to adding up the total. They simply are not interested in what the old odometer was reading when replaced.



FWIW, when you sell your truck you simply indicate that the milage is NOT ACTUAL. There is a space for this in OH-HY-YA on the title

Yes, simply make a note about the change in your maintenance log with both speedo readouts at the time and you'll be covered as long as you disclose this fact before future sale.
