Speedometer Eratic

I have a 2003. This morning on the interstate, I was running 70, speedo steady. Slowed to 55 in a work zone and the speedo started bouncing between 35 and full scale. In about 5 miles, I stopped got off the interstate and stopped at he exit ramp stop sign. When I started moving, the speedo was normal and still is after a lot of miles today.



Any idea what was going on ? Its it a sign of some electronic failure waiting to bite me

As you point out, the speedometer is not mechanically connected to anything. If it's acting wildly I suspect 2 possible problems: speed senor or computer problem. It's possible some small piece of something got temporally wedged between the sensor and the ring (inside the rear diff) causing momentary erratic readings. If this is the case, you won't have any more trouble.



The other possibility, of course, is a computer malfunction. If that's the problem, the only way to diagnose it is to wait for it to get worse. Think of it like a Windows crash - sometimes they happen with no discernable reason.

Thanks for the reply. It appears to be fine this morning, nice and stable. Windows Crash, that sends shivers down my spine, I get shakey and jerky with Windows Crashes ha ha

I've had the same thing on 2 different trucks. The first was in my '98 and that turned out to be a loose connection at the speedo sensor on the rear axle.



The last time was in my '03 and my superlift truespeed decided to kick the bucket.
