I'm changing my gears from 3. 55 cruiser style to the 4. 10 towing type. Does anyone know if I need to recalibrate my speedometer? Is it in the transmission or is it electronic through another means? Thanks for any info.
Hi there Nickaru... . I have a 4. 10 rear end I will swap you for the 3. 55's will work on a 98. Let me know. I might even buy your older ones. Hopefully they will fit. Have a dana 80.
I believe the speedo is driven off the rear ring and pinion. I have never actually looked to verify but I am doing the same thing as you and thats what i have read.
Cruiser, Dodge used both 35 and 37 splines D80's in the 2500 and 3500 diesels. So do some digging to establish what your dually is. My 99 2500 is supposed to be a 37 spline variety as should Nickaru's. What i am saying is you may each have to buy new carriers to swap gears. The r&p should swap no problem though.
The spedometer is driven off a tone ring in the rear end. It is also the same sensor for the anti-lock. To change the calibration you hook up a DRB III to the vehcle link and reset the number of revolutions per mile.
I just did this, the sensor is the sounding ring in the rear axle, same one the rear anti-lock brakes use, and you don't need to recalibrate anything. The sensor could care less what your gears are but you would need to calibrate revs/mile if you change tire size.
My truck is in the shop for the gear swap as I post this. On the Dana 80, I will need a new carrier because I'm going from the 3. 55 to the 4. 10's. If I went to 3. 73's from the 3. 55's, I could keep my original carrier in the back. As for the front Dana 60, I'm adding a limited slip while I'm having it swapped out. :-laf (towing my monster trailer through the sand)
