double nut system
Are we talking about replacing the Nylock nut with double nuts. I have had excellent result with the nylock. When I changed brake shoes, I noted that the original nut had worn to the shape of the bearing inner race. After consideration of a new nut I decided to use the original as it had seated to the shape of the bearing race and a new one would do the same thing again allowing slack in the bearings.
During the early years of using my truck, I carried quite heavy loads on the truck. I feel that this was the cause of the erosion on the nut. I have had the hubs off since and there has been no further erosion as there is much greater contact with the bearing. The last couple hundred thousand have been pulling a trailing load rather than carrying severe loads in the bed.
On the Ford that I had in the early 70s, the double nuts gave some trouble. In fact almost lost the axle from bearing failure caused by the inner nut tightening on the bearings. I have been under the impression that the new style was better.
