I have the part # for the Spicer double nut for rear axle but where do you get them? The Napa was no help they had nothing in their listing. Is it a dealer part or what?

I got mine through the Dealer at cost about 2 years ago still havnt put them in yet I figured I'd wait untill i had to do my brakes. Have 95,000 miles on the same shoes It may be getting time to check them. The front looks great so far.

double nut system

Are we talking about replacing the Nylock nut with double nuts. I have had excellent result with the nylock. When I changed brake shoes, I noted that the original nut had worn to the shape of the bearing inner race. After consideration of a new nut I decided to use the original as it had seated to the shape of the bearing race and a new one would do the same thing again allowing slack in the bearings.

During the early years of using my truck, I carried quite heavy loads on the truck. I feel that this was the cause of the erosion on the nut. I have had the hubs off since and there has been no further erosion as there is much greater contact with the bearing. The last couple hundred thousand have been pulling a trailing load rather than carrying severe loads in the bed.

On the Ford that I had in the early 70s, the double nuts gave some trouble. In fact almost lost the axle from bearing failure caused by the inner nut tightening on the bearings. I have been under the impression that the new style was better.

I know this is about the rear axle nuts but be sure about the front brake pads also. These pads have rivets and near the end of the service life, the lineing can shuck off and the rivets will grind into the rotors. Pads are cheap compared to the rotors. Because I am on long trips, I have had pads fail twice and before I got back home had ruined a rotor. If you replace before failure, you only need to change the pads.

I just installed the QUAD4X4 nut kit 0n my truck. Is was a little pricey but was very complete (high quality and came with the socket required). I was doing a brake inspection/lube change and decided to go with a setup like what's used with heavy trucks. I cringe every time I think about the little wedges coming out and the nut creeping ever tighter or looser!

I bought this kit and ended up not using it. If anyone is interested send me a PM.
