I had that choice for a broken leg, thought it would be cool to watch them drill screw holes in my bone, but the doc said there was more of a risk of numbness or nerve trouble, possibly permanent, from a spinal, so out I went.
I had 2 hernias taken care of a few months apart. I was out for the 1st one. Came out of it hard, puking my guts out. Not cool.
Next time, tried the spinal. Out patient didn't seem like a bad idea. Seemed to come around ok, till I tried to get up to go home. With almost no feeling from the waist down I wizzed all over my shoes as soon as I stood up.
All the way or no way! Done both. Your spinal canal is your entire nerve center from cortex to sacral..... the phone company has trouble with little wires..... and they built it!:--)
When I had my left leg rebuilt I asked for a spinal to watch the Dr's perform the insertion of 32 little screws and 2 long metal rods from my knee to my ankle. Well, it did not work out too great. I started to be able to feel the drill and the pain was soo bad I nearly started screaming. Before I knew it, they were putting me out with drugs. I woke up sick from the crap that they used to knock me out and had the headaches for days from the spinal. Just get put to sleep
I've had three spinals and they were all cool, with no headache. The trick is to keep your head below the level of your knees. Maybe the powered leggings helped too. A couple of nice nurses inserted a catheter to drain my bladder one time. I was hoping to get it again the other two times
I was put under two other times and barfed both times. Must have been something I ate
I've been put under 12 times, for that many surgeries. Never barfed. Very little pain, even days afterward, considering the size of the scars on the sides of my head for 10 of those surgeries.
So... no fear about surgery for anything. But a spinal? Forget it , Jack. I endured a bone marrow withdrawal when I was 5. That was enough.
Doc... . I've been catherized a couple of times and was an orderly in a hospital while going to college and performed these enough times to still give me nightmares. IMO, there's nothing sexy about this procedure no matter who performs it.....
