I just bought a 96' 5 speed that has had the engine replaced with a 160hp engine. It has a #10 plate and 370's. In second gear, it runs real rough and smokes white. In All the other gears it runs fine unless your 1500rms or less and it runs rought there also. At idle its a little rough and then it will smooth up for a minute and then run rough again. Does this sound like a timing problem? I've had a few of these trucks do this but only when their cold and you first crank them up, if you rev them, they smoke some and crack and pop a little. I've checked for fuel leaks and air leaks and everything checks out. I haven't checked fuel pressure or the suppy pump. If its the timing, can I reset the timing without special tools? I plan on a set of DV's and a 4000 gsk. I'd like to move the timing up some anyway. How much timing would work good with what I got?

PS- If anyone wants to trade their 215 pump for my little 160, let me know. I'll pay shipping on both. :-laf

That definatley sounds like a timing problem! You need to get that fixed ASAP.

The correct way to do 12V timing is with a dial indicator on the #1 delivery valve. Piers has the lift spec chart on his website.

You will need a 30mm socket I believe for the pump gear!

That's the main reason I haven't re-checked mine yet cause I have WadePatton's timing set in my basement collecting dust! :-laf
