Dynatrac's shaft is 1. 5 dia. entire length. The shaft has been turned to accept the seal at the cad location. The shaft is a bit larger were it was turned for the seal. EMS told me they turned the shaft down to the diameter of the stock shaft. What was the dai. of the shafts you took out? A guy on another forum just replaced his shafts with the one from EMS. I asked for spline count and dia. specs and he never responded. When I do my conversion I plan on taking photos and loading for all to see. There are guys interested in doing this project, but are worried with the amount of difficulty it may have. I've been building trucks and cars from my early teens and have lots of experience. If there is something that I can do to help these guys I'll do it. This conversion is'nt that difficult. The only intimidation for some, may come when replacing the side gears in the diff. to 35 spline. Another thing is I don't know anything about EMS. I learned of them a few months back. Some say their good and some say bad. I talked with Tom about the axle and he was very nice. In all my days of reading offroad mags. and watching competition not once have I seen EMS. This is why I chose Dynatrac. I have talked with Steve there and he knows his product. They have been around for many years. I had to get money for their upgrades, but I know they will perform as stated. I was in business for years and have watched subcontractors skimp on tools and supplys for their men and cost two, three, and four times as much in the long run, when if they would have bought the best the first time it would still be operating. Now I know there are people who just can't afford the higher price. I'm in a difficult situation myself, but I found the way to make it work with the best. That is why I bought the Cummins to begin with. This truck will be buried with me or make a nice head stone. If the manufactors would have added this set up from the start none of us would be in this situation. Look at what we have to pay to do the upgrade. With them doing it it would be a couple of hundred, do to the quantity they would purchase from their suppliers. Well enough of my rambling, I could go on all day and I know you guys don't want to have that. Bunyan

I will have to do some more digging-but the sealing surface on the stock CAD shaft is larger than the shaft diameter-at least as large as the actual teeth on each shaft so the inner can be pulled through the seal without removal. I can-and will-find the dimensions again-but it'll take me a little to find it.

The seal for the CAD side is a CR 19208. Shaft size is 1. 927, OD of the seal is 2. 920 and the width is 1. 210. Width appears funny because the seal has a cone-shaped shaft guide that is stamped integrally with the seal OD. I could understand EMS and/or Dynatrac sizing their shaft up to this shaft size-I just can't understand how you can turn it down any appreciable amount and still get a seal over it.

Just for reference, the left side seal (located right in the center section casting outboard of the bearing) is a CR 14694. Shaft is 1. 470", bore is again 2. 920" and the width is 1. 688"-again with an integral shaft guide. This is the identical seal that is spec'd for the '02 right side without disconnect-but the earlier axles are not finish machined in the area where this would mount-IIRC they are around 2. 78"?

JHansen I have been on the phone with the service and parts director at the dodge house. We are trying to see if there is a place on the passenger side of the diff housing to accept a seal. The seal that comes with the 02 one piece axle is the same seal number for the 01 driver side shaft that mounts inside the diff housing just outside of the bearing. When you did yours, could you tell if there was a location for a seal on the passenger side of the diff housing. If there is and is the same as the 01 driver side the seal problem is eliminated for the 02 one piece shaft. If you would like to discuss this more as I would pm me with a phone number that I can reach you at. I have unlimited long distance so it would not be your dime. Thanks Bunyan

No, the seal location is not machined on the older diffs to accept that seal-it's around 1/8" too small. There is no seal surface on the OEM inner shaft either.

I will PM you a couple #'s for me so we can talk about it instead of trading messages back and forth.

Thanks

Thanks, you have been very helpful.

JHansen. Do you remember the dia. of the inner shaft at the seal location in the cad? Was the new 02 shaft the same dia. there bigger or smaller? I'm thinking if the 02 shaft is the same or a bit larger then it can be turned . 001 of an inch to clean up for the seal to work at the cad. I tried calling, but no answer.
