Split Fuel Line

Just replace the fuel line for number four cylinder from the rail to the injector.

I was wondering if this is comonplace and if running a Smarty Jr. on the towing setting might have anything to do with it.

Very common Gene. It's not the Smarty. There are several threads on it here. I suggest that any CR owner carry a spare #4 line and wrenches to put it on at all times.

I've got 79K and never had one break but I did recently replace it with the newer style part and I carry the old one as a spare.

Has there ever been any specific reason for this happening?

I have heard a loose clamp, but nothing definitive.

I don't know. . They changed the line at the rail end but I understand it's the head side that cracks.

Two calls on the #4 this Sat/Friday. Over the years I have collect this line(#4) I have only 2 left. . Many have crack it more then once,Here's the fix I came up with that seems to work, Remove the Rail and slide copper washers under the Rail and Plenum(3) Now Just finger tight the 3 Rail bolts,then Balance tighten all the Injection line 1-6, Then tighten the 3 rail Bolts to 30ft Lbs, If you use thick Copper washer 35fts Lbs.



On the 2 calls both required tow service Ugh.

Injection line for #4 cylinder is the most common one to fail; earlier trucks with no brace on #6 may suffer that failure. When installing a new line, I grease lightly the taper fits and threads, and make sure there is no twisting force stressing the line. When the clamp is tightened, it should not try to move the line.

Dumb question, how far can I make it once it starts leaking?

If the system can't make enough pressure it wont allow the truck to start. So it really depends on how bad it is.

Thanks for the reply. I'm camping about fifteen miles from home (so it will be a short walk). My main concerne was running lean on that cylinder and possibly causing a bigger problem, hopefully it starts. I bought it new in 06 and this is the first real problem besides the tach that has it's own mind. Ten years and two trucks, this is the first question I couldn't find an answer for (speaks volumes for our little community). I guess after I fix this I should update my profile Thanks again

It's dripping near the injector. I smelled it when we got here, thats when I found the leak. The clamp was loose, thats probably what caused it. Thanks for the offer, but I'm in Northeast PA, so it will have to wait until after the holiday. Like I said we are close to home so I might chance it and hope for the best. You mentioned earlier you replaced it with a newer one, is it a Cummins part or after market?

No need to worry about running lean- diesel engines always run lean, espescially when idling. The biggest issue is running out of fuel and ending up with a big mess to clean up.

Nope, it was from Cummins. Thankfully the little buggers are cheap at only about $26. I replaced mine just as a precaution so I still have the old one.

Well the truck made it home! Just ordered the replacement from Cummins $29. 98, had I known about it sooner I probably would have made it a maintenance item. Thanks again

Always carry a spare #4. . Just got off the phone with customer that is on #4 thats right just blew the line for the 4th Time in 5 Years. . its an 04 went 3 years no problem never modded the truck. . All factory, Wired... He's going to try the copper washers this time, My 03 has the same lines OEM and the rail has been removed and changed 4 times, the lines have been removed at lease 3 more times. Never had 1 split or leak.
