Spongy Brakes - How to bleed?

2001 with ABS and RWAL



I've read every thread on this subject but I still can't find a reason why I can't get all the air out of my brake system. At least that’s what I’m assuming the problem is…



I just changed out the Hydro-boost unit and in doing so I had to remove the brake master cylinder.



Didn't do a bench bleed on the Master cylinder. Put it back together and bled the Master cylinder by cracking the 2 brake lines coming out of the unit while my helper pushed on the pedal.



I bled all 4 wheels 5 times with helper pushing on pedal while I open bleed screw and close after pedal hits the floor. I’ve gone through over 50 ounces of brake fluid!



Still my pedal is spongy and goes down too far.



I’m at a complete loose as to what the problem could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Everytime I have worked with a master cylinder, I have always had to bench bleed it. I have yet to see a brake master cylinder, that bleeds out properly at a wheel end or by traditional bleeding methods.



Get a bench bleeder kit from a local parts store and do it on the truck, just have someone pump the pedal until the bubbles are gone.

Thanks for your responce. Can you give me some idea of what the bench bleeder kit consist of and how it works differently then cracking the 2 lines coming out and having a helper push on the pedal?

If I remember right it has two plastic tubes and some fittings/adapters. It takes the fluid from the tubing ports and puts it back into the M. C. reservoir. I think the difference is the volume of fluid that you move with each pump.
