Towing w/HO, 6-speed and EZ?

Mallard 39D to big?

Well, I hooked up and took off for the Sierras for the first towing test since the DTT trans mods were done. The results? Exaust braking was so nice I found myself chuckling so much my wife began to stare and shake her head. 2nd gear lock up was awesome going up a steep grade out of Bear River Resort and the 3k GSK helped fuel it as fast as I wanted it to.

The only problem, and I'm sure its a small one, is taking off from a stop... . uphill. The Dodge just tries and tries and pumps out so much black smoke that I though someone would dial 911. Once the turbo spools up, away we go but what about a little more grunt on the low side? It's only a 6k lb TT!

I have the timing set to 15. 5, a #6 tst plate (forward some), exaust and a stock housing, and a K&N. How can I overcome the slow take-off senario? Any help is valued...

Thanks, Steve.

I have the same converter and the same problem. Just wait until you get a bigger turbo!!! Remember how much smoke came from those oil wells on fire during the gulf war? :{

did I say problem?

I can deal with the smoke and slower spool up. It's really a symptom, not a problem... Poor choice of words on my behalf. Let's just call it a "symptom".

:)

Its a by product of your 91% converter. Work on things that reduce turbo lag. Air flow improvements like 4" exhaust and the air filter, whick you already have. Next are things that increase pre-boost fueling. This helps spoolup the turbo better.

The smoke will be a trade off. You'll get a little bit more initial smoke because of the added fuel, but the turbo will spool better so the duration that you sit there pumping out the cloud will be smaller. Overall I think the big cloud is smaller, but a tiny bit more during light throttle situations.

Of the mods I have so far, when Piers installed the 191 delivery valves and setup the AFC adjustments to match, I got the single best improvement in spoolup.

figured as much

I thought the 91% would go smokie on me, and thats not too much to handle. Wouldn't you know... by adding more fuel, things just get better! :D I'll consider that upgrade to the DV's and try to catch Piers at a ralley here in CA sometime.

I'll see what the afc adjustment do for me as well. Thanks for the tip.

Chris you should take Sly's advice here. get it tuned up by a professional and start enjoying your outlay of money. it sounds like you have a bunch of half baked performance blunders holding you back. go back to the basics, and lose the chip.
