Hello Guys,

I have been wanting to paint the chrome "+" part of my laramie grill in matching Atlantic Blue and install a chrome insert. This will give me a 1/2 sport look. Has anyone tried this and is the chrome hard to paint? I will sand it and prime it w/ some type of plastic primer but need to know if their is any more to it.

Does anyone have a chrome insert they want to get rid of for a good price or know where i can get one (fact or aftermarket) reasonably priced?

TIA

DD

I have tried to paint the chrome on my 2006 Laramie bumper and from expierence IT DOES NOT WORK. I took my time sanding the H*LL out of the chrome hoping to make a rough surface for the primer to stick too and to no avail the paint has slowly been chipping away and showing the chrome underneath. I also used flexible primer and paint on the section.

I wanted to do the same thing to my grille but after having little success with painting the chrome on my bumper, I went out and bought an ST grille and had a body shop paint it. Four months and no issues yet, still looks perfect even where I shaved the Dodge Ram's Head emblem.

The only thing I didn't try with my bumper, is to powersand (either electric or air) the chrome completely off and try to prime and paint from the plastic base.

Here are some pictures of what I tried if you are interested. I don't have any current pictures of my front bumper with the rock chips. I will take some tomorrow. Sorry for being so long winded but it is a real pain in the neck to make work.

Thanks CEsposito,

Thanks

I've seen on several auto shows where duplo makes an adhesion product to spray on chrome before painting it. You might want to try looking into using that. I have a rock chip in my chrome grill, it just takes a pounding sticking out there so I don't think anything will prevent chipping except maybe putting Line-X on it.

Chrome??

You could have it sand blasted. Just about any where that paints heavy equipment will have one. We have one at work that runs off a trailer mounted compressor. It will eat away at anything in front of it.

Thanks and keep the info coming

I can't sandblast as part of the grill outer shell is already painted(only on the Laramie's) and i want to retain the orig paint in order to make it match.

Thanks again
