I'm installing sport headlights and the instructions say for the high beams to hook a wire to lug 87 and another to lug 87a. My relay has no 87a , Did I get the wrong relay or can I hook both filaments to lug 87? Idon't want to burn it up.

Thanks Mike

Not sure how exactly you're trying to hook up your lights, but 87 is the "normally open" position while 87a is the "normally closed" position. Sounds like you have the wrong relay. Make sure that it is rated for about 30-amps. Also, make sure that your instructions are correct for your 2001. This year uses grounded switching.

David gave you the best answer you're going to get without sharing the rest of the wiring diagram with us.

Perhaps contacting the supplier of the "instructions" you mentioned would be your best bet.

Good luck.

the instructions were the ones floating around on here for awhile witch said to use generic 30 amp relays. they have 4 posts. do they make relays with 5 posts? My truck is half way done and I don't want to panic. The post # are 87 86 85 30 If anyone who has done this upgrade could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mike

The relay posts to use are generally on the opposite sides. I have about 50 of those things at work but none here at home. .

#30 is the hot or battery side (after the fuse). #87 is the switched side going to the lights. The other terminals are the relay's coil winding.

Per previous messages, be care how it hooks to your truck. Some have negative lead switching (ground side) with the other post hot. (best and safest)

Other vehicles ground the relay coil and apply +12v (not the safest thing to do).

Look at this diagram. It shows the whole kit and kaboodle.

Mike, there are a thousand ways you can hook up those lights, but here is one that will work with your headlights and current relays for your '01 truck.

P. S. Not sure how it is going to come across here after I downsize it enough to fit.

P. S. S. PM me with your email address if you want a decent size.
