Spraying water on intercooler

Has anyone sprayed water across the front of their intercooler on a long pull and if so what happened to the EGT?
 
I haven't sprayed water on mine but pulling a trailer up Cabbage Hill on I-80 in OR last winter my EGTs were at 1100° then it started snowing hard, EGTs dropped to 950°. Hard to say if the temp dropped due to rise in elevation temperature change or the snow brought it down. Spraying water on the inner cooler will only bring down the EGTs while you are actually spraying it, It will have no lasting effect like spraying down a radiator to lower coolant temp since the inner cooler is always passing new air while a radiator is passing the same fluid over and over, when you cool it, it takes awhile to heat back up again.
 
At the Drags last night I was talking to a guy with a pumped up mitsubishi eclipse (24psi of boost and internally adjustable fuel mixture) he would spray down his intercooler with water before each race. It does lower charge air temp, but only while there is water on the intercooler to evaporate. I have installed a thermocouple on my intake horn to test such a system. When I have some data I will post it.
 
In the latest issue of Trailer Life, there is a water misting system sold that sprays water through the grille of the truck. Lowers water temps for towing. May work for EGT's, too.
 
imho water can intensify the heat if not cooled upon delivery. spray 95 degree water on lawn and its not cooling at all, just adding to the soil temps because of transevaporation. although this analogy seems out of place, the same holds true in the intercooler, the grille might be cooled for an instant, but after that the water is only acting as a conductor. its kind of like a 95 degree day in fla vs a 95 degree day in vegas. not only is the air heavier its also hotter. this is i good idea, but being in the turf business ive had ideas about dry ice and liquid nitrogen for cooling. alot of the fields we work on have underground cooling and heating capabilties, why not a true intercooler system? we spend money on trying to lower egts, and the intercooler is overlooked in almost all cases. the majority of the air to our engines hits us right in the face, cool it.

A couple of guys in the Ramrunner's (local TDR) have these on their trucks and they manually remotely spray when towing up long hills.

comes some info I've learned. any water sprayed on the intercooler needs to be a mist, heavy drops just aren't effective as packman stated. I'm not for certain but a windshield washer pump might get the job done for quick bursts, passing w/trailer in tow, Duramax, SD. if you had the room, a liquid nitrogen chilled intercooler would be the Bomb. years ago there was a 68 vette w/BBC that ran 268+ at bonneville using this system. packaging and handling would be more difficult parts. there is a ton of space under a LWB QC for a nitrogen storage tank. where is that winning lotto ticket

Liquid N2... wow my intercooler is screaming in pain... . can you say Stress Cracks.



The idea I have is to use ice water and spray it on the exposed section next to the AC Condencer. One thought I had, we need to make sure the water is pure... . some tap water could form scale deposits on the heat transfer surfaces of the intercooler..... rendering that portion useless
 
safety concerns, a -320 deg F liquid splashing against your skin, a liquid in a pressurized container. this would be an outerlimits type system. I don't think your intercooler would stress crack. by using the appropriate temper aluminum it would still be able to "flex" with the torque of the truck. the intercooler would be just like a water to air intercooler used in most drag racing apps. another formula that works well is alcohol & dry ice.
 
misters and stuff

I have been checking in on this idea for some time and am going to get it going after I get back from vacation in Eureka. I will probably expand on the " Desert super-cooler" idea and run a sureflow pump to misters located in the grill area. I wanted to concentrate on the transmission cooler and will put several others inline as well. The tank will come from the RV salvage yard and will be in the neighborhood of 20+ gallons ($35), used sureflow($20), misters/sprayers (around $25) and flex line and fittings. I want to switch it manualy but I suppose it could run off a thermostat as well. I want the tank to be in a location where I can get to it easily so i'm looking at a mount for the bed area. This should help the high transmission temps when pulling hard, I hope.

If anyone has done this, I'm open to suggestions too.

Hey, now we're talkin. I need a couple of these for testing on the Psychotty system. We are currently getting a testing procedure procured and that is one of my key testpoints. I will be eagerly waiting for your #'s from Autometer.



Diesel Freak, how expensive was your thermocouple setup??
