I have recently installed a SPS62 in my 2003. After install I developed an oil leak. Drain line is stock, and lear of obstructions. Turbo was sent back and completly torn down. Shane says all ok. My question is this, has anyone had to modify the drain tube to allow better flow, as I. I. says oil flow restriction will cause oil to leak out of turbo. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

where is the oil leaking? compressor side? turbine side?

call II and ask them what size orifice is supposed to be on the inlet side... these engines put out a lot of oil volume/pressure... you might need a restrictor orifice on the inlet side.

but only go by their recomendation, and if they recomend against an orifice, don't do it for obvious reasons

we had to modify our drain tube on a 12v, infact we had to cut up the old one and weld it all together just so that the drain tube would fit.

Forrest, the oil is leaking out of the turbine side. Shane at II thinks that the oil is not draining out fast enough, and this is causing it to back up and weep out of the shaft seal. Should there be an orifice on the inlet? The only fitting I have is the one off of the stock turbo, that connects the braided line to the turbo and the oil filter housing.

Devan, I will probably have to have mine worke over, so that the two 90 degree bends are smoothed out.

Thanks

Forrest,

Thank you for your advice. I received turbo back from II. Ordered new drain tube from dealer. Installed without modifying. Found this interesting, I was able to remove the original drain tube from the turbo while still in truck. Now with the turbo re-installed after return from II had to fight the drain back in. Could not understand why everyone said to put drain on first... . until now. Will see if this works.

Thanks

If you had a second gen, the early 12 valve drain tube doesn't fit well with some larger compressor housings. For them, use the 24 valve style oil drain pipe. The third gen drain pipe should fit OK. Be sure the oil feed and drain are close to level, that is the mounting surfaces are parallel to the ground, so the oil flows through the turbo correctly.

Joseph,

That might have been my problem. When I reinstalled, the position of the drain was such that I could barely get the drain on with the turbo hung. During the original install, I was able to get the drain off no problem. I think, that when II checked out the turbo, it was then aligned properly. I must add, that II educated me on the way the oil drain is supposed to operate, and look. Shane was very helpful, and they received, rebuilt my turbo and shipped it back in the same day!

Thanks
